Directionals Blinking Fast After Installing LED Bulbs Diagnose and Quick Fix Hyper Flashing Lights

Created on: 2021-09-07

In this video, Len shows you an easy fix for the hyper flashing, and explains the problem behind it!

So we just finished up our old to bold video on this 1994 Chevy K1500 Pickup. I went ahead and I replaced all the lamp assemblies with some brand new ones from 1A. And, of course, I wanted to make sure that I used LED bulbs so I could be seen as far as possible. Unfortunately, with directionals, if you replace them with LEDs, you're gonna get hyper flashing and we need to figure this out.

Hey friends, it's Len here from 1A Auto. We've got hyper flashing from our directionals. We wanna figure it out. While I'm in the passenger compartment, I can hear a loud clicking noise. I want to continue on and I'm gonna follow and see if I can find that clicking noise. I'm just gonna feel around. And right here is where my directional relay is. How can I tell that this is the one? I'm holding on to it and I can feel it clicking underneath my fingers. I'm gonna go ahead and turn off the key power and remove it.

Okay, so we got our relay out of the box right there. The reason why we're replacing this is because the original relay is meant to look for a load that's coming from your directional bulbs. The original bulbs are gonna draw a lot more energy and the relay is looking for that. It wants to make sure that everything's functioning properly. If you have a bulb out, it's gonna flash fast like this.

When you replace your bulbs with LED bulbs, those LEDs aren't necessarily gonna draw as much power so that the load on the relay itself isn't really gonna be where it's supposed to be, and the car is gonna think that it has a bulb out.

The flasher relay can be located in different areas depending on your make and model. Now, by simply replacing the relay with one that's meant for LED lights, it's gonna be able to function properly. It's not necessarily gonna be looking for the original load. It's gonna be looking for a little bit less, and it's gonna be able to function right. Let's go ahead and plug this in and try it out.

On my relay, I can even use a knob to adjust the speed of the directional. Let's go a little faster. Now, if you didn't want to do it the easy way and replace your relay, of course you can get yourself a whole bunch of resistors that look like this and tap into your wiring harness. To fix this using inline resistors, you're gonna have to have enough of them for each bulb, and you're gonna need a test light to test the circuits. Remove your lamp assembly. Test your wires to find the ground and positive for your directional. Splice in your resistor between your power and your ground wire.

When you have it all together, it should look something like this. In my opinion, using one of these inline resistors right here could potentially damage the wiring for your particular vehicle. It doesn't make sense to go ahead and tap into something and put in a whole bunch of resistors, especially since you could potentially damage the wiring. Not only that, you might have to buy a resistor for each individual bulb that you're trying to fix with an LED. It only makes sense to go ahead and replace it with one of these relays right here. They're very simple and cheap overall.

I hope this video helped you if you were having this issue or maybe you know somebody that's having the issue. Go ahead and share with them. It would mean everything to me.
