Clunking Vibrating From the Dash Whats That Noise in My Car or Truck

Created on: 2020-02-25

What's that noise? It's a bad blower motor! Check this out to hear the noise, and see some tips to fix it!

Do you hear that noise? Does your heat or AC make that noise when you start it up? Well, that's what we're gonna talk about in this video. Let's get started.

When you turn on your heat or your AC, what you're actually doing is activating the blower motor. This has a squirrel cage. And this spin, this works like a fan. It's gonna suck air in here and blow it out through your HVAC system and that's how you get your heat and AC. This is what a normal blower motor sounds like when it's powered up. Nice and quiet. So, there's an electric motor that's right here in the back and those have bushings or bearings and those can wear out over time. It's not necessarily that you'll grab this and it'll be like a wheel bearing that's loose, but it could and those are gonna make noise. Also, you can get pine needles and leaves in here or even rodents and acorns if you don't change your cabin filter regularly or if you don't have a cabin filter. And that could potentially when the blower motor is on full blast cause the dash to actually vibrate. Basically, what's going on with this motor is it's been used a lot. It's at the end of its life, it needs to be replaced. If your motor is making this noise, you got to replace it.

All right. Let's talk about locations. The most common location for where the blower motor actually is is under the glove box. You may have a cover under there. You may have to take that down with some screws or some push clips. And to take the blower motor out, sometimes they're screwed in, sometimes you're gonna have a twist locking type where you actually have to push the clip down and twist it up. Another not as common area you might find your blow motor, next to the gas pedal. You may have to remove the pedals to gain access to it. Not quite as common, but they're still there. Another location that's maybe a little more common than near the gas pedal, under the cowl. You open the hood, take the wipers off, take the cowl off. Sometimes the cabin filter is right there and the blower motor will be under there. So, if you have a truck or a van, your blower motor may be located right here under the hood. Pretty easy to access. If you have a minivan or a large SUV, and then you have an auxiliary heater with an auxiliary blower motor, it's probably gonna be in the back on the side compartment.
