Car or Truck Horn Wont Stop How to Diagnose a Stuck Horn

Created on: 2021-07-11

Andy shows you how to stop and then diagnose a horn that is stuck on and won't stop honking!

Dude, what's going on? I'm trying to work. I can't do anything.

Yeah, I know. It's stuck. I don't know what's going on?

Luckily, in this video, we're gonna show you what to do when you have a stuck horn.

The first thing you want to do is grab the horn button, and give it a shake, see if you can loosen something up. Maybe it's stuck down, that's what's going on. Give it a couple of taps. If that's not it, let's move on. You wanna pop the hood, find the fuse box. Take the cover off and find where the horn fuse is.

While you're searching for the horn fuse, as the horn is going, it may fluster you and cause you to not be able to focus and find where the horn fuses. In that instance, just disconnect the battery so you have more time to find the fuse. You can find the fuse, and use the puller, and pull the fuse out. With the horn fuse removed, we can reconnect the battery and see if the horn is still going. It shouldn't be, but there is always that possibility where there's a wiring short somewhere and it's still going.

Another thing you can do to stop the horns from making noise is disconnecting the horn right at the source. So, just push down on the connector, slide it off. And most vehicles have two horns so we'd have to do the same on the other side, and disconnect the other side as well. Now, most horns have two wires going to them. There is also single wires going to horns that it just grounds it through the body. And most it's very unlikely that the horn is the cause of the short, why it's on. It could be a slight possibility depending on how the wiring is set up, but just disconnecting that, that'll get the horn to stop making noise.

A pretty common problem with a horn being stuck on is a bad relay. The relay contacts could be sticking together and that's what's keeping the horn on. So find the relay for the horn. You can remove that. You can put the fuse back in, see if the horn is going with the fuse back in. It shouldn't be. And then you could always grab another relay that matches that number and switch it. Sometimes the air conditioning has the same number, and if the horns not honking with the new relay in and the fuse, that's probably your bad relay.

And if you swap the relay, you have the fuse in and the battery is connected, and every time you put the relay in, you hear the horn beeping. If that's the case, most likely the cause is between the relay and the horn button. With the battery disconnected, I'm gonna pull the airbag off and disconnect the airbag. With the airbag disconnected, we can reconnect the negative battery cable. Just don't turn the key on in the vehicle. Most of the times when you have the key off, most vehicles the horn actually still works.

So then we can check the switch right here. This is where the switch is. And there may be a spring that's broken underneath here. And if you see that, then most likely you're gonna have to replace either the horn pad or the springs. The most likely cause for the horn being stuck on is the relay. So it's a good idea to check around that area first, and then it could be the horn button sticking. If it's not one of those, it could be a comfort module or a body control module that's shorted causing this to happen, or even a wiring issue. And if you have any other aftermarket accessories, such as a remote start. If you've had any experience with this before, leave me a comment, and let me know how you fixed it.
