Top Check Engine Trouble Codes 1998-2011 Ford Ranger Truck

Created on: 2021-05-14

Sue explains the most common check engine trouble codes on the 1998 to 2011 Ford Ranger

In this video, we're going to go over the top engine codes we found for '98 to 2011 Ford Ranger. First one I want to talk about is PO128, very common in Ford Rangers and all it is, is a simple thermostat. I remember when it first came out and this code came out. I was like, "I've never seen a code for a thermostat. Or Ford put it in their PO128." And guess what? These are notorious for thermostat housing problems, leaks. So it's never going to reach temperature, right? Because it's leaking coolant at the thermostat housing, replace a thermostat, replace the housing, clear the code, and you should be good to go.

PO1101 mass airflow. This truck has a mass air flow sensor in it located right here on the air tube, going from the air filter to the throttle body. First thing always with massive flow sensors, you've got to make sure there's no air leaks. Make sure all the clamps are tight, that cover is down tight. Next, what I would do is while it's running and that engine light's been on, wiggle the harness. I call it the wiggle test for Fords. Tap on this where the sensor is mounted, see if the idle fluctuates while you're doing this, It's a quick test, and you know that it's going to be in the harness or in the sensor. It is a restriction in the air flow so open your air box, make sure that the little neighborhood rodent didn't make a house in there and has clogged up the airway. That's the first and fastest way. Secondly, you can take a Torx bit and take this mass airflow sensor out. And with intake cleaner, it's a can spray some people used to use carb spray, but it's a little too high potent kind of contaminate that sensor. It's circuit board don't forget. So just take the actual fluid that is called for and that's intake massive flow sensor cleaner, tip it upside down so that you're not going into the circuit board, clean that element that's actually going to be taking the reading, plug it in, clear the code. Maybe it won't come back and you've fixed it yourself.

P1804 that was a four-wheel drive shift motor. So the symptom of that code a P1804 is the four-wheel drive not working. You put it in four-wheel drive and it's non operable, it's in-op it doesn't work. It indicates to come down here and check this motor. Four-wheel drive shift motor mounted right here on the backside of the transfer case. These are notorious for going bad and especially in New England or in hot state, because this motor overheats the connector right down here, gets sand in it, dirt, and sometimes they're even hard to disconnect. I'll just use a little screwdriver, push down on that tab, and then I can open that up and you have to look for corrosion or melted. This motor is mounted with a mounting bolt back here in three of these 10 millimeter socket head bolts, weasel it off, and then more than likely, but you can tell by the housing where that motor sits the corrosion, it's probably no good. I replaced quite a few of these in my time.
