Andy points out the top 5 most common problems that mechanics and Subaru have reported on the 1st gen Crosstrek.
In this video, we're going over the top five problems on this 1st Generation Subaru Crosstrek. Now this vehicle is not a bad vehicle to buy or own, every vehicle has their problems. Number one, the battery going dead. Now the battery is located right here. And the best thing to do when you have a battery that's constantly going dead, is do a parasitic draw test, which we will link a video in the description on how to do that. So a few reasons why your battery might be going dead. If you don't drive the vehicle enough, if the vehicle is just sitting there and it sits for more than 30 days, chances are, you're gonna need to charge the battery.
Now, if you drive the vehicle very minimally, if you only drive about a mile a day, if you just go down to the grocery store and then back, and it's not even a chance for the vehicle to warm up, that's not enough to keep the battery charged. And there is always a chance you left one of the lights on, or a dome light, or leading light, or something like that. So double check that.
Number two, camshaft position sensor codes. Now your camshafts are located on the sides of the engine. Now this is a Boxster style engine. So the pistons are horizontally opposed. Now the camshaft position sensors are located right here, there's one on the bottom, and there's one on the opposite side of the engine and the bottom as well. Now, if you get those codes P000A or P000B, it's not necessarily that the cam sensors are bad, they could be, but the first thing you wanna do is check your oil level. And if the oil level is good, change your oil, especially if it doesn't look clean. And then after you do that, clear the codes, recheck it, see if those codes come back. And then if they do, there may be an internal engine component that has failed.
Number three, the leak detection pump. Now it's located more on the passenger side right above the differential, the rear differential, and that has to do with your EVAP system or part of your admission system. Now if you get a code P1449, it's a good idea to take these hoses off. Sometimes these hoses clog up and there's the canister is back here. So these hoses go to the actual leak detection pump. There's a bunch of them. So keep in mind where they go, clean those hoses out, and then clear the code and drive it again. If the code comes back, then chances are you need a leak detection pump.
Number four, corrosion on the rear splashguard fastener. Now Subaru actually knows about this problem. The original fasteners that hold these splashguards on are not corrosive resistant, so you can actually buy a kit to replace this screw with some corrosive resistant screws. And also make sure when you're doing that to make sure that splashguard stays in the right position. You don't want it to be crooked when you put that in.
Number five, the brake light switch. Now a brake light switch is located at the brake pedal itself, it's at the top of the assembly. Now some of the symptoms, you may notice a traction control light, an ABS light, or even a hill holder light, on. And the code that you may find with these symptoms is a C1531. Now if you have any of these symptoms, the best thing to do is contact the dealer. They do have an updated switch that might fix your problem.
