Top 5 Problems GMC Canyon Truck 1st Generation 2004-12

In this video, I'm going to be going over the top five problems on this first generation GMC Canyon.

Now, there's nothing wrong with this vehicle. There's nothing wrong with buying one or owning one. Every vehicle has their issues, and we're just going over the top five.

Number one, timing chain. Now, the timing chain is located inside the motor, and it basically connects the bottom internals to the top.

A timing chain is, kind of, like a timing belt. Although timing belts you have to change every 60,000 to 80,000 miles, timing chains do last longer, but you got to make sure you change your oil and make sure the oil is up to par. Another thing to pay attention to while you're doing the timing chains is the camshaft bazer actuator. It has to do with the variable valve timing. It's on the camshaft and those will fail and cause the same condition.

Number two, the PCV hose. Now, you may end up with a drivability issue and engine running rough. And you check engine light with a code P0300 and a P0171, which is a fuel trim issue. The PCV hose is located at the back of the intake over here. And sometimes these will get brittle and crack or even collapse if they're made of rubber. This one happens to be made of plastic. But if that happens, it's going to cause those codes. It's a pretty easy fix, just take it off, you might have to take this plenum off first, and then be able to access it. But that connects to the valve cover or the PCV valves. Just replace it and you should be good to go.

Number three, low idle speed. Now, you may notice the check engine light is on and the vehicle's idle is really low. With the check engine light you have P0506. Now, the common problem for this is the throttle body being dirty. What you can do is take off the intake snorkel in this piece and clean up the throttle body. It's best to take the throttle body off, clean it up, put it back on. Or, if it's really bad, you can replace the throttle body.

Number four, the EVAP vent valve. Now, it's located above the spare tire, right here next to the canister. Now, this is part of the emission system. This prevents fuel vapor from entering the atmosphere. And the valve is right there. You'll end up with a check engine light with a code P0450, or some other EVAP code. But it's common for these valves to get stuck. You'll get debris in there and it'll cause it to not open and close properly. And the only cure for that is to replace it. Now, before you just go and replace that valve, you always want to check your gas cap. If your gas cap is loose, it's going to cause the same conditions.

Number five, the blower motor resistor. You may find when you're trying to use your heat or your air conditioning that there's no air coming out. Maybe there's different settings that work like number one or two work but not three or four. A lot of times that means the blower motor resistor has actually failed and it needs to be replaced. So the blower motor resistor is right under here, right next to the blower motor itself, and there's the wires that are attached to it.

A lot of times if you have a blower motor resistor that's gone or burnt out, a lot of times the amperage from the motor is causing the resistor to fail. So it's a good idea to look into the motor as well, and the connectors sometimes melt, so it's a good idea to replace those connectors while you're doing it.
