Andy points out the most common problems with the 3 series, with our 330i, and gives you tips and suggestions on how you can solve those problems yourself!
In this video, we're going over the top five problems on this 5th Generation BMW 330i.
Number one, oil leaks. Now, a common oil leak on these cars is the valve cover gasket, which is located right here, and also the oil filter adaptor gasket. Now, the parts themselves aren't normally too expensive and fairly easy to change. Some common leaks underneath the vehicle would be more the oil pan gasket or the front main seal.
Number two, struts and shocks. Now, you may notice while you're going down the road the car feels a little bit bouncy or it seems a little stiffer and most likely the cause of that is due to these struts in the front or the shocks in the rear. And you can see this vehicle it's leaking, so in this case, this vehicle needs new struts. And if you're having a problem with the rear of the vehicle, the rear shocks may be bad, they may be leaking, or they may even be broken. If you look at this one, this one is completely snapped off. This car definitely needs some rear shocks and we need some new struts as well.
Number three, the blower motor and resistor. On this vehicle, it's like most vehicles, underneath the glove box. There's a panel here, you normally take that panel off, but if you find that you're heating and the air conditioning, the blower motor's not working properly, most likely it has to do with the blower motor or the resistor. Normally when the resistor goes, it's a sign that the blower motor was drawing too much current through the resistor and basically burning the resistor out. And sometimes the opposite, the blower motor is damaged due to the resistor. So it's a good idea to replace them both at the same time.
Number four, ignition coils. Now, they're located right on top of the engine underneath this cover, and the symptoms you're going to find is the engine's running rough, you have a check engine light, and most likely the check engine light's flashing. When replacing coils, it's always a great idea to replace the spark plugs as well.
Number five, the VVT solenoids. Those are located on the front of the engine, right here, there's two of them. The lower one and the upper one. When those go bad, you may notice some drivability issues, maybe some acceleration issues, and you probably have a check engine light on. To prevent these from going bad, make sure you change your oil regularly and make sure your oil level is up to par.
