Andy explains the top problems you might find or want to watch out for if you own or are shopping for an Acura TL. He also gives tips on how you can identify and fix those problems yourself!
In this video, we're going over the top five problems on this third-generation Acura TL. Number one, the transmission. You may notice that you have some problems when you're shifting the vehicle or the vehicle doesn't move properly. And you also on the dash, you have the D4 light flashing. In some cases, you may just have a major transmission leak and the fluid level is low. And all you have to do is top off the fluid, fix the leaks. In most cases, you're gonna have an internal problem in the transmission itself, and the transmission is gonna need to be removed, repaired, or replaced.
Number two, the front lower control arm bushings. Lower control arm is located right here, and you have a bushing behind this bracket. You have a bushing right here, and then there's also a bushing over here. These bushings are made of rubber, and they deteriorate over time. And you can see that this one is actually separating. This piece should be further down, and they dry rot. So some of the symptoms you'll notice when you have a problem like this is it is gonna cause abnormal tire wear, because the alignment is gonna be off, and you may hear some clunking going over bumps.
Number three, the front and rear shocks. You may notice while you're driving around, if you're going over bumps, that the vehicle bounces a little more than normal. And if you take a look at the shocks all the way around, you may find some fluid leaking out of the shocks. In that case, you're gonna have to replace them.
Number four, the EGR valve. Now it's located right here. And when this valve goes bad, you may notice a rough idle, rough running conditions, sometimes extended crank when you go to start it, and a check engine light. To replace this valve, it's pretty easy. Just disconnect the connector. There are two nuts on either side and then a gasket. Pull it off, put a new gasket on, put the valve on, reconnect it.
Number five, the idle air control valve. On earlier generations of this same model have an idle air control valve that's attached to the bottom of the throttle body, those are on the vehicles that have cable-activated throttle bodies. This has an electronically controlled throttle body, which has the idle air control valve integrated into the throttle body. Both of them can have the same problem. The only advantage of the idle air control valve being separate is you can replace just the valve instead of the whole throttle body. The symptoms you may notice is a surging idle or even a stalling condition. For either one, you may potentially take it apart and try to clean it. But, for the most part, you have to replace those components.
