The Right Way to Remove Stickers from Your Car or Truck

Created on: 2021-07-04

Sue shows you a few tips on the right way to remove stickers cleanly and safely, and a few things not to do!

In this video, we're gonna talk about do's and don'ts on how to get rid of bumper stickers. So, there's a couple of places people like to put their stickers on cars. Obviously glass, metal, and then you get your plastic bumper. The best place to put any bumper sticker or any sticker, shall I say, is on the glass. Easy to come off. Clean it with a rag after you scrape it off. You can even sometimes peel them if they've been in the sun.

Metal, a little bit easier. Steel contracts with heat. If you put it in the sun long enough, you can just probably peel it with your fingernail, or with a plastic razor. So, that's what these look like. They're plastic. And once this heats up, you can just get underneath there and start rolling it down and then peel it right up. See, that's what's gonna happen.

So when you see the adhesive sticking on the paint, the last thing you want to do is start heavy scraping. And never, for God's sake, never use a straight edge on the paint, because you have a chance of actually digging into the paint, look at that, and taking paint out. You don't want to do that. Holding that sticker there. Now, when it comes to the plastic bumper covers, this is even harder to do than metal or glass. You can use a plastic one if you can get it to start underneath there.

Come on, Andy, let go of that ear. I'm going to pull his ear with his face. So, that can be tedious, especially if this bumper sticker has been on, say, for several years or months has baked in the sun. As you can see by Andy's great complexion, he hasn't been on that long. So, another way to get a sticker off of plastic, and you don't want to destroy the paint and the clear coat. If it's been baking in the sun long enough, and it's really becoming bothersome and it won't come off. This will work on metal, too, is anything that's a penetrating spray like WD-40 or what we have here.

So I'm just gonna soak this sticker, and let's see how if it lifts the glue up. How do you like that, Andy? Now, just a little rag. I'm just gonna, hopefully, get this saturated enough that it actually gets through the paper and onto the glue. Now, with obviously the plastic razor blade, let's see if I can lift this up any easier. I can already tell you, it's peeling easier. Oh, Andy is gone.

And if that doesn't work, you can always just smack it. You don't want to burn it off. Oh yeah, that's not gonna be good, huh? Now, if you were silly enough to try to burn it off, let's see what will happen if we hit this with some penetrating spray. It's got oil base in it, so let's see it will buff this burn mark right off. Oh, not good. Geez, I thought the bumper sticker of Andy's face depreciated it, but I think the burn mark will do it worse.

So, obviously, with it on the metal, I'm going to use the plastic razor blade. That's a do, don't use a metal blade. And then you're just gonna peel it up. Man, I hate when that happens. So, all of this paper stuck behind, what are we gonna do? Like, how are we going to get this off without a metal blade? That's really hard. How do you get this off there? Just keep peeling it. I'm gonna see, and I'm sure that...let's spray it with the penetrating spray. So far, this has been the answer to everything. And I'm sure it's because it's got the nice oil base to it. Yeah, let that soak. We'll come back to it like in 15 minutes.

All right, so 15 minutes later. And yeah, what a big difference. I can actually...it seems like you can get to peel it. Just gonna have to keep doing this and soaking it and peeling it. So, if you don't have any penetrating spray, vegetable oil, extra virgin olive oil, and peanut butter. Peanut butter works, too. Goo Gone. All that other product stuff, which is all you'll find is petroleum-based, other than the food products. But it all has an oil base to it. And that oil doesn't damage the paint or the clear coat, and it just sticks in...soaks into the paper, and lets the glue detach.

And just make sure you get yourself one of these, plastic razor blade. You can get them anywhere. And it's just a handy thing to have. You can use the real razor blades on the glass as long as you're careful with it, but it will work better on glass a real razor blade. That's another thing, don't pull straight up. Try to roll it. Roll it tight against the actual sticker like that. And it puts even pressure on it instead of pulling it up and a way, it pulls it down.

Now my hand's real slippery. So, as you can see, now that the sticker is gone, look at the mark the real razor blade left. And I wasn't really trying. I was trying to get underneath that paper. And I destroyed that. That's not really great for that vehicle. In the future, we'll always peel them out. That clear coat is gonna be damaged. The paint is damaged. I can't imagine if you did this to your own personal car, and it's something that you care for, and you want to make it last. So, always, always use a plastic razor blade. And try all those oils.

And don't forget to always wash your vehicle and wax it. A good coat of wax will always help your vehicle for long-lasting life. One more point I want to make. So, a lot of people have children, they put them in the backseat, and they allow them to take stickers and put them on the glass. It's a good pastime. It makes a child relax because of the stickers they put on. It gives them their own personal home space. The only problem I have with that is that when you're driving, and you always put your children, if you have one or two, if you have one, you put them...old enough, you put them in the passenger rear so you can see over your shoulder and talk to them.

But when they're old enough, let's take the stickers away because it's also kind of a distraction and a danger point for you, because that blocks your view. So if you go to turn to the right, and you try to look out that window, there's stickers all over it, maybe you won't see that pedestrian or a car that's actually there if you can't see it in your mirror.

Oh, hey, I didn't see you there. Hi, Andy. So, what we're gonna do is, always use a holder. And the reason I say that is because I have used straight razor blades go like this and just snap, and that razor blade rolls over and cuts the crap out of your hand. Let me tell you, that's not fun because razors are sharp. That's what they're meant to be. Try to get a holder, something with some sort of holder, so you don't roll it, and you can just... You don't even need, with glass, you don't need a spray or anything. Come on, Andy, let's go for a walk.

Well, that concludes our do's and don'ts on how to remove bumper stickers from plastic and metal. Don't forget the glass. If you're a subscriber, thank you. If you're not, please subscribe. Don't forget to ring that bell because that turns on all your notifications so you won't miss any future videos. Tyler, where did that sticker of Andy go? Because I gotta find it before the boss shows up.
