Recently, I had a chance to do a brake job on a truck and as I got into that truck, to drive it over to the garage, I experienced something I never want to experience with brakes: the sensation, the sound, the grinding. I just want to show you this as one of those videos of what you should not do, how far you should not let your brakes go. You should never let your brakes go as far as the brakes went on this truck. Here what I'm doing is I'm shutting everything off. I'm going to let this truck coast down the hill and then apply the brakes so watch my foot and when I put on those brakes, listen.

What you should hear when I do this is nothing. You should not be able to hear your brakes work on the inside of your car. The clip probably doesn't do it justice because the camera was actually trying to buffer out wind noise so it probably misinterpreted some of the braking noise as the wind noise. Again you shouldn't hear anything from your brakes from inside the car and you will start hearing squeaking, a squealing noise when your brakes start to wear because your brakes have wear tabs and when you hear that squealing you should either check the condition of your brakes yourself or take it to a shop to have them check the condition of your brakes.

This is too far. You can see this. These are actually the rivets that hold the pad in place. There's no pad left. That's why it was grinding so much. It's grinding away at the disk and what can happen is it can actually grind so far and go through and it can lock the brakes up. It's not effective braking. It's dangerous for you. It's dangerous for anybody that's on the road around you. The other thing I forgot to mention while I was filming this is, that pads like this can also, even before they grind to the fins inside the rotor, obviously they're not effective braking and all they do is produce heat and heat will cause brake fade so while you may feel like you have stopping power, you will lose your stopping power very quickly. Again if you start hearing your brakes squealing or making a high pitch noise, that's when it's time to check them and also just check them at regular intervals. Every 10,000, or every 15,000 miles. You can see my rotor here. Here's the front side. Here's the back side. It is totally ground. I don't know if you can see really, but there are just deep grooves where those rivets have been worn in. Again, that's not safe. You do not want to let your brakes go this far.

Please take your brakes seriously. Check them if you feel like something's wrong with them. If you're thinking about doing a brake job yourself check out one our helpful videos. You can watch it.
