Is My Car or Truck Suspension Ball Joint Bad

Created on: 2010-10-07

Ever wonder if your ball joint has gone bad in your car's suspension? We'll show you how to determine whether or not it has in this helpful video!

  1. step 1 :Check your ball joint
    • The ball joint connects your steering knuckle and control arm.
    • These two parts should not be moving independently.
    • You should be looking for play in the joint.
    • If you find deterioration or play in the joint, visit 1AAuto.com to find a replacement ball joint.

Brought to you by 1AAuto.com, your source for quality auto replacement parts and the bets service on the internet. In this video, we're going to take a look and see what a bad ball joint looks like. It's in this '98 Explorer but really goes for any vehicle. The ball joint connects your steering knuckle at the bottom with your lower control alarm at the top and actually, on some vehicles, this could reversed, the control alarm can be on the bottom and steering knuckle on the top. Basically, those shouldn't be able to move independently. They should move together and the ball joint should connect them securely.

Okay, right here is your ball joint and on this truck, it's really bad. You can easily see the motion. You can see if I lift up on the tire, you could see the ball joint moving right there. What you want to do is raise your vehicle up a little bit, put a bar underneath the wheel to it and have somebody look and see if they can see if the plate up and down or side to side there. Here's just a close up. These two pieces of metal should not move in relation to each other. You can see how that bottom gets close to the top. That should not happen. If you check in your ball joint, your lower ball joint, that's what you're looking for. Any kind of play, either side to side, front or rear or up or down in that joint. If you seen it then you'll want to replace your ball joint. We do sell ball joints at 1AAuto.com. There are a couple of videos on how to do it. Some cars are easier, some cars are more difficult. You might want to consider a professional.
