Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1A Auto. I want to help you save time and money repairing or maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20-plus years experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly: that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.
In this video, we are going to show you how to replace the rear window regulator on this 2008 HHR. If your motor sounds like it is working, but there is a clicking or grinding noise coming from the door and your window is not going up and down, but you can grab the window and move it up and down by hand, that means that your regulator is gone. Tools you will need are: small flat blade screwdriver, a T30 Torx Driver, a putty knife or door panel clip tool, and a 10mm wrench or socket and ratchet.
First of all, you're going to start in the pull cup here. There's just a rubber grommet that has a little tab on the back here. Grab hold of it, pull it up and out, and there are two T30 screws. Then right here, this little tab, pull it out and pick it up, and there's another T30 screw there. Then, again, with your screwdriver, there's just a little pin right here to pry out. We'll fast-motion here. Use a screwdriver, pull that pin out and then use a T30 Torx driver and remove the two screws that are in that door panel pull cup there, and then the screw up behind the door handle.
Now I'm going to use a putty knife just to pull your door panel out a little bit. Basically what you want to do is run your fingers in behind the door panel, pull until you feel it where it's really tight, then give it a good pull to pull the clips out. Pull out right up here. Behind here on your door panel, on your door handle, there's a little clip at the bottom of the cable and it pulls up and out. Use a little flat blade screwdriver, and on each side of your lock switch, pry out just a little bit and the lock switch comes out. You just kind of pry right there and right there. Just to correct myself, that little switch is actually a window switch when you're working with the rear door on these vehicles.
Carefully pull your watershield off. I am going to speed this up a little bit. You do want to carefully pull that back. You don't want to rip it or tear it, because it keeps the water out of your door panel as well as a sound barrier. Then I use a little bit of painter's tape and tape it back.
Normally what happens to these regulators is there is a cable in behind here and usually it snaps. When the cable snaps, then the motor makes noise, makes clicking or grinding noise, but the window doesn't move, and you can move the window up and down by hand. What we want to do to get the regulator out is remove two 10mm bolts: one there, and one there. Loosen these 10mm bolts. Loosen this one up. Now the window slides up and out a little bit. If you look here, I used a little bit of that blue painter's tape just to hold the window up.
We'll remove this and remove this bolt, and this bolt. So remove these two bolts down here first, then we'll remove this one here, and then our regulator. Pull our regulator out there. It looks like it's kind of caught on the speaker wire down there. With the regulator out of the way, see our lead plugs in right here. You want to use a screwdriver, push there and then pull that lead out. The regulator's out.
Here's the new regulator from 1A Auto. You can see it's just like the old one. I'm going to plug in my lead first. I'll hang that nut right up there. Start that bolt and start that bolt. Tighten them up. I've got the key on. You can see it's working well. Make sure those are loose. Run it right up. Tighten these bolts up. Take off my tape. We are all back up and working. Obviously, turn the key to the car back off and put your watershield back in place.
Then keep speeding it up through putting the door panel on. If this is too fast for you and you want to see this in regular speed, just check out our other videos for the HHR rear door panel, but you can probably get enough by looking here. Once you get your door panel on, you'll be all set and we hope this is helpful.
