How to Replace Window Regulator 2001-07 Ford Escape

In this video, we'll be showing you how to replace the rear power window regulator on this 2002 Ford Escape, same as any 2001 to 2007. Although, for some years, how you remove the door panel may differ slightly. Also, it's very similar for the Mercury Mariner. Tools you'll need for this repair are a small flat blade screwdriver, a Phillips screwdriver, a 10mm socket and ratchet with an extension, some painter's tape, and, of course, a new window regulator from 1AAuto.com.

You want to start out: There is a Phillips screw down in the door pull here. Then, use a small flat blade screwdriver and pry out this little trap door and then there's another Phillips screw in there. I'll just hit fast forward here as we use a Phillips screwdriver to remove those two screws. With that out , you can bring this out. Pull nice and firm. Get that off that. Right in here, work your fingers underneath and pull out on this panel. It's out. Now you're just going to reach behind and pull firmly out on the door panel, and it comes out. Behind is a little tab. You reach underneath and disconnect your window harness. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the bracket that holds the door panel and then carefully pull back the door shield, or the water shield. You want to try to do your best not to tear it or rip it or stretch it too much. Pull it back to expose the inside of the door.

As you can see on that last shot, my window regulator and motor are working fine and I was able to lower it just by replugging in the switch. But, usually what happens is the cable breaks on these and when the cable breaks what you can actually do is just grab hold of the window and move it up and down by hand. What you want to do is move it to a position like this where you can get at those two 10mm bolts. You remove those two 10mm bolts. I'll fast forward here as I remove those two bolts. Once those bolts are out, you want to pull the weatherstrip on the top inside window ledge out, and then lift your window up. Once you get the window separated and raised up, use some painter's tape and tape it up in place so it doesn't fall down. There are two nuts you want to remove. They're both 10mm there and there and then three bolts right here. We'll also want to disconnect our window motor lead. Just press on the tab and pull that off. Again, we'll fast forward here as I remove those two nuts and the three bolts. Once you get those nuts and bolts out, pull the rail back and the regulator out, just like that.

My original regulator is in good shape. I am going to mount that back in there. The regulators from 1AAuto will bolt in fine. They may be a little different where they have these studs, bolt the motor in. Use studs and nuts and there may be a pigtail on here, but everything is going to bolt in and still connect just like the originals. Put it back in. Feed it in. Put the regulator back in, the motor back up like that. Make sure that the regulator is inside the window, put in that stud and that stud, and line up the window motor. Fast forward here, again. Just get the window motor lined up and start the bolts back in by hand. Start the other nut on the regulator and then tighten them up. When you tighten them up, you want to tighten them nice and firm. Just make sure everything stays in place. Then obviously, you want to plug the lead in to the window motor. Remove your tape from the window up top here and let it slide down. Make sure it lines up correctly down here. If you have to, plug your switch back in, turn the key on, and raise or lower the new regulator so that you can get to these bolts. Here, I'm going to fast forward again as I put the two bolts that hold the window to the regulator. These are the coarse-thread bolts and these you want to tighten up. We definitely don't want to over tighten them because they just go into plastic fittings, so you could strip the plastic. Just tighten them carefully and once you get a good amount of resistance, stop tightening. Turn your key on, do a test. Everything's working good.

Remove that switch and then put your water shield carefully back up in place and then reinstall the bracket that holds the door panel, using the screw and a Phillips screwdriver. Reinstall the door panel, get it close, reconnect your window switch, and you just have to look for the clips into where they start in on both sides. Push the top right in. Fast forward from here on out, basically just set all those clips. Be careful, look back in, make sure you get the clips going into their holes before you use the back of your hand to just kind of punch them in. Make sure you put the bezel back on the door handle. Put the two screws back in. Once you put those screws back in, you just put that rear bezel back on and you're all set.
