Hi, I'm Don from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and the next time you need a part for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to remove and reinstall a rear window regulator on this 2005 Hyundai Elantra. It's pretty much the same for any of this era's Elantra. We show you the driver's side door, but the passenger side door is the same procedure. You'll need a new regulator from 1AAuto.com, a small flat blade screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, a 10mm socket with a ratchet and extension, and painter's tape.
Taking off the door panel, I'm going to pop out my trim pieces that cover the fasteners. This is one, and another down here. I'm just using a flat blade screwdriver. There's two, three. Locate the door handle screw, the side screw, under the grab handle, under the grab handle, and upper left. Now I'm taking off the Phillips screw that holds the bezel end of the door handle. I'll pull the handle out and it'll slip right past it. Just speed up here as we remove the rest of the Phillips screws. I'm going to use my knee to hold the door open while I give a little bit of a tug to the handle, enough to get some room with my hand. I'll feel around for the clips and just gently separate them from the door. Once those are free, you can lift up.
I'm removing the window switch harness. There's a tab on the top of the harness. Remove the one Phillips head screw. With a flat blade screwdriver, disconnect your blue clip and your pink clip. Push one cable out. The top cable comes out through the bottom. The bottom cable comes out through the top. Disconnect your clips from the handle. Slide your handle assembly forward and pull out. I'm using a razor blade to cut the adhesive that's holding the moisture barrier in place. I'm just going to fast-forward. Obviously, be very careful working with a razor blade, or you could use a utility knife. You don't want to stretch or rip the moisture barrier, it helps keep water out of your door panel. Just pull it off down to a point where you can access the inside of the door easily.
In order to take the harness off the motor, you're going to find a little clip right here, and you can use a little flat blade screwdriver. Push it up to hear it click. There are three 10mm nuts holding the motor in place that I'm taking out. You can see here, work the motor back and forth. If you need to you, can grab a flat blade screwdriver, and pry it from the back to break it free from the door. I'm going to push the window down gently to the point where I see one 10mm bolt, the other 10mm bolt. Fast-forward a little bit as we remove those two 10mm bolts. Those bolts hold the window to the window regulator. I'm going to pull up the window. If it comes out, you can always just take it out if it comes out easily. In this case I'm just going to use some painter's tape, hold it up top. You'll find four bolts: one, two, three, four, and one nut. Again, we'll fast-forward as we remove those.
Squeeze this retaining clip in here, and pop it out in the door. Pull the regulator through. There are two white clips: one here and one here. While you're pushing the regulator this way, you want to push them in and slide your regulator till the notches line up. It pulls right out. You use a pair of needle nose pliers to pop the clips off. There's three or four wire clips. Again, you just use the pliers. You'll see a couple ears on the back sides of the clips. Squeeze them, and then pull the wire clips through. I'm putting the regulator back in, making sure that my door handle and lock cables are up. I'm going to slide it back into those clips. I'm going to push them through, pull it towards me, set the stud in, and put the upper clip back in.
At this point, you may notice that we put the old regulator in there, not a new one. That's just because this car, there's nothing wrong with that one, but the new regulators from 1A Auto are going to go in, they're going to mount, and bolt in, and plug in just the same as the originals.
Put the glass back on the regulator. To get it in there I'm just going to put the bolt in the socket. Hold it with one of my fingers and thread it into place so it doesn't fall. Putting the motor back on. When I'm doing that, I'm going to play with the window regulator with my hand, so that the gears match up. Once they do, it'll slide right in. I'll get my motor back in. Put my clips back in, my regulator, and the all important door cable clip.
Put the shield back up. I'm putting the handle back in, and there's four aligning notches. I'm going to snap it into place and then push back to lock it in. Put the Phillips screw back in. I've got my two cables. Goes in, locks it in place. Bottom cable snap the cable in. Door panel's going back in. Connect my harness. I'll rest the window seal on the sill. Push down, make sure my holes are lined up for my fasteners, and then pop the clips back in. Starting from this side, put my handle bezel back on. Again we'll fast-forward as we just put those screws back in and tighten them up. Put my trim pieces back on.
