How to Replace Window Regulator 1998-2001 Nissan Altima

How to repair, install, fix, change or replace a slow, stuck, cracked or damaged window regulator on Nissan Altima, years 98, 99, 00, and 01.

step 1 :Removing the Door Panel
- Pry off the trim piece inside the door pull with a flat blade screwdriver
- Remove the Phillips head screw inside the door pull
- Pry off the door handle bezel with a flat blade screwdriver
- Pry up the window switch panel with a flat blade screwdriver
- Disconnect the window switch wiring harness
- Pry out the door panel with a door panel clip tool or putty knife
- Lift the door panel up and off
- Remove the 10mm screws from the metal bracket
- Carefully peel off the water shield

step 2 :Removing the Regulator
- Remove the four 10mm bolts from the brace
- Loosen the two 10mm bolts that hold the window to the regulator
- Raise the window by hand
- Hold the window in place with painter's tape
- Disconnect the window motor lead
- Remove the three 10mm bolts from the regulator motor
- Remove the two 10mm bolts from the regulator
- Loosen the third 10mm bolt from the regulator
- Pull the window regulator out through the door

step 3 :Installing the New Motor
- Remove the screws from the old motor with an impact driver or screwdriver and hammer
- Insert the new motor to the regulator
- Tighten the screws to the new motor

step 4 :Reinstalling the Regulator
- Insert one of the bolts into the window regulator
- Push the regulator into the door
- Hang the regulator by its bolt
- Insert the 10mm bolts into the regulator
- Insert the three 10mm bolts into the regulator motor
- Connect the window motor lead
- Remove the painter's tape from the window
- Lower the window onto the regulator
- Insert the two 10mm bolts that hold the window to the regulator
- Tighten the four 10mm bolts from the brace

step 5 :Reinstalling the Door Panel
- Put the water shield into place
- Insert the 10mm screws from the metal bracket
- Lift the door panel into place
- Push in the door panel clips
- Push on the door handle bezel
- Connect the window switch wiring harnesses
- Push in the window switch panel
- Insert the Phillips screw into the door handle
- Insert the Phillips screw into the door pull
- Push on the trim piece inside the door handle
- Push on the trim piece inside the door pull

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace a broken window regulator in this 2000 Nissan Altima with a new regulator from 1A Auto. Usually when your regulator breaks, you'll hear the motor trying to work, but the window doesn't go up and down. You can usually grab onto the window and move it by hand without the motor interfering. Tools you'll need include a small flat blade screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, a 10mm socket with a ratchet and extension, a putty knife or something similar to pry the door panel, and you might need an impact driver. You'll see how I use it later in the video. Also, what usually works is just a screwdriver with a hammer, and you tap it as you turn the screw counterclockwise to get them loose.
Start by taking a flat blade screwdriver and the little trim button right down in here. Be wary of all the sticky stuff down in here sometimes. Pry that up, and then there's a Phillips screw there. Then here you need to carefully, and you can see this has actually already been broken, carefully go in here, pry out up here, pry out and up here, pry out as well and remove this bezel. You can see it has four places where clips go in. Here I'm just using a Phillips screwdriver to take out that screw, and pull up on that pull cup. All of a sudden it comes up and off and the switch comes out with it. Pull backwards and out.
Then underneath there's a tab on the harness where it connects. Push the tab down and disconnect the harness. Pull out, work your fingernails underneath, and pull out on the door panel and release a bunch of clips. Lift the panel up and off. Fast-forward here a little bit. There is a bracket on the middle of the door. Use a 10mm socket and ratchet or a screwdriver would work and remove the bracket so that you can then pull that water shield down. You might be able to tell that somebody just cut the water shield before. That's not what you want to do. You want to pull it off. Try not to damage it. Keep it intact.
Now with that water shield out of the way, you'll see a brace that is held on by another 10mm bolts and remove those. Remove the brace. These regulators are cable actuated. Actually my regulator here is fine, but I am going to take it apart and put it back together just to show you. When the regulator breaks, usually you can hear the motor try to work, but nothing happens, and you can also usually grab onto the window and move it up and down without anything interfering. What you want to do is either yourself or have a helper move the window into this position so you can easily get at this bolt here. You can get at this bolt through this hole here. Going to fast-forward here as I remove those two bolts, and then, once those bolts are out, you can grab the window and slide it up into the top of the frame. Just hold the window up with some painter's tape.
Okay, now there's your connection for your motor right here. You just pull up on the little tab and disconnect that. Then you can actually reach in behind and squeeze on a couple of tabs to get the clip off. Now the motor's held in by three bolts: one, two and three. Remove this bolt and this bolt down here, and loosen this bolt from the regulator rail. Again, I'll fast-forward here as I get that clip out for the harness, and then remove those bolts and loosen up the other one for the rail. Slide this over and down, lift your window motor up and out. Then the whole assembly comes right out.
Okay, now at this point you're going to remove the window motor from your old regulator, and put it on your new one. I'm using an impact driver. Okay, most of the time, what you can do is use a screwdriver and basically, while you put some pressure on the screwdriver in a counterclockwise motion, you tap the screwdriver with a hammer, and that will usually get those bolts loose or those screws loose. Remove them, remove your motor, make sure you unclip the wire harness, and then reinstall your motor onto the new regulator.
Make sure you put the bolt up here in your top left corner, slip your motor in. Regulator in and hung up right there. Lift the motor up, one of the tabs right here and the other there. Now just put all the bolts back in. Speed it up here one more time as we just put all the bolts into the motor plate, the motor bracket, as well as the rail. Then use our socket and ratchet to tighten them up. Take the tape off and slide your window down. Make sure it goes outside of the regulator. Once the window's down, start the bolts in that hold the regulator to the window. Then tighten those up.
Now you're going to put the brace back on. It has an arrow that points up, and also has a Styrofoam block that goes in towards the inside of the door. Then use the four bolts to mount it, tighten them up, and then put your water shield back up in place. Put the door panel brace back on. Okay, to put this on you want to get the back clip in here first and then go at it a really good angle. Push it up and then on. Now bring the front up, push it in towards the window and down on, put the edges in. Put this back in place, push this down in, and grab the harness. Reconnect that. Push the front in first and then the back down in. Put our Phillips screw back in. Then our little trim run.
