How to Replace Window Regulator 1998-2001 Nissan Altima

How to repair, install, fix, change or replace a slow, stuck, cracked or damaged window regulator on Nissan Altima, years 98, 99, 00, and 01.

step 1 :Removing the Door Panel
- Pry off the trim piece inside the door pull with a flat blade screwdriver
- Pry off the trim piece inside the door handle with a flat blade screwdriver
- Remove the Phillips head screw inside the door pull
- Remove the Phillips head screw inside the door handle
- Pry off the door handle bezel
- Pry up the window switch panel by hand
- Disconnect the window switch wiring harnesses
- Pry out the door panel with a door panel clip tool or putty knife
- Lift the door panel up and off
- Remove the bracket with a 10mm socket and ratchet
- Carefully peel off the water shield
- Remove the four 10mm bolts from the brace

step 2 :Removing the Window Regulator
- Have an assistant lift the window to reach to 10mm bolts on the window
- Loosen the two 10mm bolts that hold the window to the regulator
- Raise the window by hand
- Hold the window in place with painter's tape
- Disconnect the window motor lead
- Remove the three 10mm bolts from the regulator motor
- Remove the two 10mm bolts from the regulator and loosen the third
- Pull the window regulator out through the door

step 3 :Reinstalling the Regulator
- Insert one of the bolts into the window regulator
- Push the regulator into the door
- Hang the regulator by its bolt
- Insert the three 10mm bolts into the regulator
- Insert the three 10mm bolts into the motor
- Remove the painter's tape from the window
- Lower the window onto the regulator
- Insert the two 10mm bolts that hold the window to the regulator
- Connect the window motor lead

step 4 :Reinstalling the Door Panel
- Insert the four 10mm bolts to the brace
- Put the water shield into place
- Insert the 10mm bolts to the second brace
- Lift the door panel into place
- Push in the door panel clips
- Push on the door handle bezel
- Connect window switch wiring harnesses
- Push the switch panel in place
- Insert the Phillips head screw inside the door handle
- Insert the Phillips head screw inside the door pull
- Push on the trim piece inside the door pull
- Pry off the trim piece inside the door handle

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace a rear window regulator and motor assembly on this 2000 Nissan Altima, same as any '98 to '01 Altima. Tools you'll need are pretty basic: a small flat blade screwdriver, a Phillips screwdriver, and a 10mm socket with a ratchet and extension. You'll also need some painter's tape.
Start by taking a flat blade screwdriver and there's a little trim button right down in here. You have to be careful, there's a little sticky stuff down in here sometimes, pry that up and then there's a Phillips screw there. Then here, you need to carefully, and you can see this is actually already been broken, but carefully go in here and pry out. Up here, pry out, and up here, pry out as well. Then remove this bezel. You can see it has four places where clips go in. Here I'm just using a Phillips screwdriver, take out that screw, and pull up on that pull cup. The pull cup comes up and off and the switch comes out with it; pull it backwards and out. Then underneath there's a tab on the harness where it connects, push the tab down, disconnect the harness.
I'm going to pull out. Work your fingernails underneath, and pull out on the door panel and release a bunch of clips. Lift the panel up and off. Fast-forward here a little bit, there is a bracket on the middle of the door, use a 10mm socket and ratchet or a screwdriver would work and remove the bracket so that you can then pull that water shield down. You might be able to tell that somebody just cut the water shield before, that's not what you want to do, you want to pull it off, try not to damage it, keep it intact.
Now with that water shield out of the way, you'll see a brace that is held on by another four 10mm bolts. Remove those and remove the brace. These regulators are cable actuated. Actually, and my regulator here is fine, but I'm going to take it apart and put it back together just to show you. When the regulator breaks, usually, you can hear the motor try to work but nothing happens. Also, you can, usually, grab onto the window and move it up and down without anything interfering. What you want to do is either yourself or have a helper move the window into this position so you can easily get at this bolt here and you can get at this bolt through this hole here. I'm going to fast-forward here as I remove those two bolts, and then once those bolts are out you can grab the window and slide it up and into the top of the frame. Just hold the window up with some painter's tape.
Now there's your connection for your motor right here, you just pull up on a little tab and disconnect that. Then you can actually reach in behind and squeeze on a couple of tabs to get that clip off. Now the motor's held in by three bolts: one, two and three. Remove this bolt and this bolt down here, and loosen this bolt for the regulator rail. Again, I'll fast-forward here as I get that clip out for the harness and then remove those bolts and loosen up the other one for the rail. Slide this over and down. Lift your window motor up and out, and then the whole assembly comes right out.
For reinstallation, make sure you put the bolt up here in your top left corner, slip your motor in. Slide your regulator in, get your regulator hung up right there, lift your motor up. There's one of the tabs right there; the other one there. Now just put all the bolts back in. Speed it up here one more time as we just put all the bolts into the motor plate, the motor bracket as well as the rail, and then use our socket and ratchet to tighten them up. Take the tape off and slide your window down, make sure it goes outside of the regulator. Once the window's down, start the bolts in that hold the regulator to the window and then tighten those up.
Now you're going to put the brace back on, it has an arrow that points up and it also has a Styrofoam block that goes in towards the inside of the door. Then use the four bolts to mount, tighten them up. Then put your water shield back up in place and the door panel brace back on.
To put this on, you want to get the back clipped in here first. I'm going to go at a pretty good angle, push it up, and then on. Now bring the front up, push it in towards the window and down on. Push the edges in. Put this back in place. Reach down in, grab the harness, and reconnect that. Push the front in first and then the back down in. We'll put our Phillips screw back in and then our little trim button.
