How to Replace Window Regulator 2005-08 Chevy Malibu

Here are the steps needed to replace the power window regulator on your 05-08 Chevy Malibu.

step 1 :Removing the Door Panel
- Remove the door handle bezel with a flat blade screwdriver
- Pry off the trim piece inside the door pull with a flat blade screwdriver
- Remove the two T25 Torx screws inside the door pull
- Push the push pins on the back of the panel
- Remove the pins by hand or flat blade screwdriver
- Pry out the door panel with a door panel clip tool or putty knife
- Pry off the mirror base trim piece by hand
- Lift the door panel up and off
- Disconnect the window switch wiring harness
- Carefully peel off the water shield

step 2 :Removing the Window Regulator
- Adjust the window close to down but not all the way
- Push out the middle of the barrel behind the wire with a flat blade screwdriver
- Remove the middle sleeve of the barrel
- Push the larger barrel out
- Raise the window by hand
- Hold the window in place with painter's tape
- Disconnect the window motor lead
- Remove the three 10mm bolts from the regulator and motor assembly
- Bring the window down
- Push the smaller barrel into the window slot with the marking on the backside
- Push the larger barrel into the window slot with the tapered side on the backside
- Squeeze the barrels together with pliers
- Raise the window
- Hold the window in place with painter's tape

step 3 :Installing the New Regulator
- Insert one of the bolts into the window regulator
- Push the regulator into the door
- Hang the regulator by its bolt
- Tighten the three 10mm bolts into the regulator and motor assembly
- Slowly lower the window onto the regulator, clip and lock it
- Reconnect the window switch wiring harness
- Test the window

step 4 :Reinstalling the Door Panel
- Put the water shield into place
- Lift the door panel into place
- Connect the lock rod to the door handle
- Re-clip the door handle bezel
- Replace the push pins on the back of the panel
- Insert the two T25 Torx screws inside the door pull
- Replace piece inside the door pull

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the rear regulator on this 2006 Chevy Malibu Sedan, same as any '04 to '08 Sedan of this style. Tools you'll need include a flat blade screwdriver, T25 Torx driver, door panel clip tool or household putty knife, some Painter's Tape, a 10mm wrench or a socket, a ratchet, and a large pair of pliers.
First, you want to remove this cut around the door handle, pry it down underneath your door handle, and pull out. You're going to have to push up on the top and get your screwdriver if you can in between, just try to pry up on this part. There's going to be one more down here. Pull that off. There's a little trap door right behind your door pull. Take that out. There's two T25 Torx screws right here. I'll just do a little bit of fast-motion here while I take out those two T25 Torx screws.
On the back of your door handle, there are two little push pins. You push the middle in, and the one down here. If you push the middle in, then you can either grab them with your fingernails or use a screwdriver and pry those pins out. Now, you either use a door panel clip tool or even a household putty knife will work. Put it in behind the door panel and pry out a little bit. Once you work it behind there, you slide it. Just pull the door panel off its clips. You now slide the door panel up. The water shield was actually pinned to the door panel and it's also stuck to the door itself, so you're just going to separate the door panel and the water shield. Behind is your lead for putting power in the switch. You can just use a screwdriver, press on the tab, and release that. Then pull that part the rest of the way. Carefully move your water shield and insulation.
Here's my new regulator, and I have this out to show you. The window slides right down into this clamp here. It has a little plastic, kind of round barrel that locks in. What you have to do is basically unlock that barrel, and you could see on this new regulator what often happens to your old ones is this cable snaps or this wheel up here, and they go bad or they break. In that case, you can usually just move your window up and down with your hand. You can see at my window almost way down. Like I said, if your window regulator is broken, probably this cable is broken, and you'll be able to move your window up and down by hand. Now, actually my window regulator is in okay shape. I'm just doing this on this car to show you. What you're looking for is you want to have the window in this position, and if you look right through this slot right here, you'll see that barrel. It's kind of hard to see. What you want to do is take a screwdriver and put it through and try and push out the middle of the barrel. I got the middle push and got away.
What you may need to do is hold your window. Just knock the small part out right here. There's the middle sleeve of that barrel. Now, just push the other part. It just fell down. Here's the larger part of the barrel. This goes through the window and this goes in it to lock it, so you have to push that middle part out and then push that part out. I'll start to use painter's tape, pull my window right up as high as it goes, and place a piece of tape on there to hold it.
Now, I can remove my regulator. The lead is plugged right here. You want to push on the little tab there and unplug it. Remove these two bolts. I'm going to fast-forward here as I remove those two bolts, and then just loosen the top one. Now, your regulator slides up back, and you can bring it down and right out. Now, you have to bring the window down. You could see the hole where that barrel goes. Take your barrel, the side that you pushed out with your screwdriver will have some marks in it so that's the side you want to push in towards the inside of the car, and the same thing with the lock. The tapered side is the side you pushed on. Push that back side, get it started with my fingers and then we'll use a big pair of pliers, and just squeeze that together. Now, raise my window back up into place and tape it.
Okay, new regulator from 1A Auto. It's all the same as the original. Just one slight difference is that there's a pigtail on this connector, and you can see that I put my bolt in right up here. I'm going to feed it up this way first, drop it down, bring it up, hang that bolt right there. Okay. Speed it up as I put those two mounting bolts in and tighten them up nice and snug. You don't have to crack them really hard. You don't want to over tighten them, but get them nice and firm. Okay, now I'm just taking the tape off the window and sliding it right down into place. The window should go right in and lock.
I've got the key on and I'll plug in my switch and give a quick test. Everything seems to look real nice. Reinstall your door panel; make sure you plug in your car window switch first. Bring the panel up and put your lock rod in place. Push the top of the panel towards the window, then down. Make sure your pins are in. Push that on. Reset these little pins but push them back out so they're sticking up and out. Then the two T25 Torx screws, you got to get them in place. We'll speed it up again as we just tighten up those two screws. Put this trim plate back on, and you're all set.
