Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the under-hood light wiring harness in this Dodge Ram. This one's a 2008, but the procedure's pretty much the same for a 1998 to 2010. You'll need a new harness from 1AAuto.com and a trim clip tool or a pair of needle-nose pliers.
The underhood light in our third gen Ram is very convenient when working underneath the hood. Unfortunately, it's a very harsh environment being on the bottom of the hood over the hot engine. These wiring harnesses can melt down, or have corrosion issues or other problems. Replacing the harness is very simple and great way to keep that convenience of being able to see what you're doing underneath the hood of your truck.
Slide the red safety tab on the bottom connector of the harness out. Push down and release the connector. If you have a trim clip tool, or something similar, that's going to be the best way to remove these little body clips securing the wire harness. If not, you can get it done if you're careful with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Slide the pliers under the base of the clip. Squeeze down to release the tabs and work it out of the hole. There's one on the back of the hinge. There should be a circular body clip here. Ours is broken, so carefully pry yours out the same that we've been removing these connectors, and pull your underhood heat shielding out of the way. Finish removing the two connectors, holding the harness into place. Once the harness is free, pop out the red safety, push down and disconnect the connector. Remove your old harness from the vehicle.
As you can see, we have the same connectors on the light end. It comes with new clips all the way down at the same intervals to reattach onto the hood and down into the engine bay. We have the same connectors to connect to the main harness in our engine compartment. Reconnect the connector at the light and engage the red safety tab. We're going to loop the harness up through the top and install all the connectors back where they came from. In some cases, there might be some minor differences in the harness because it could be universal to fit several different vehicles. Ours has an extra clip here for a hole we don't have. Reconnect the connector under the hood. Engage the red safety. Check for proper operation of your light.
