In this video, we're going to be working with our 2001 Ford Ranger four-wheel drive. We're going to show you how to remove and replace the transfer case control module, or the 4x4 control module. This only applies to vehicles with electronically controlled 4x4, meaning you have a switch on the dash as opposed to a manual shifter or a lever on the floor.

Here are the items you'll need for this repair: 7mm socket, ratchet

A four wheel drive, or transfer case control module is located behind the passenger side kick panel, which is this plastic panel right around where your passenger's feet would be. We'll lift up on the rocker panel cover here. We can just lift that out of the way. You only have to undo one, or two clips.

Grab the back of the kick panel and pull toward you. Swing it out and remove it. Disconnect the electrical connectors on the transfer case control module. Then remove the 7mm screw. One at the bottom and one at the top, with a socket and ratchet. When the screws are out, you can remove your transfer case control module from the vehicle.

Here we have our old four wheel drive control module, or transfer case control module, that we removed from our vehicle, and our new part from As you can see, these parts are absolutely identical. This is actually a Ford part that we have here. It's the same part you would get at the dealership. We have the same connector locations at the bottom. The same mounting locations on either side. This is for vehicles with electronically controlled four wheel drive, which have a transfer case shift motor and a selector switch on the dash, as opposed to having the manual stick-shift on the ground, that you use to engage and disengage the transfer case in four wheel drive.

If you're having issues with your electronic four wheel drive system, and you've narrowed it down to the module, this new part from 1AAuto is going to go in, direct fit, just like your original equipment, and fix you up right.

Install the new module and start the 7mm screws by hand. Tighten down the screws with a 7mm socket and ratchet. Reconnect the electrical connectors. You'll see that the receptacles in the module are color coded, so the black one goes on the top and the grey one at the bottom. Place the top of the kick panel cover underneath the A-pillar trim. Swing the bottom into place. Lock it in. Lay your rocker panel trim back down, and snap it back into its clips.
