Hi, I'm Don from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.

In this video we're going to show you how to replace a tailgate handle on this 1996 Chevy Tahoe. This particular model is the style with the lift gate as well. The items you'll need are a Phillips screwdriver, a flat blade screwdriver, a 10mm socket and ratchet, a pair of pliers and a pick.

Pull your tailgate down, and now you want to remove the series of Phillip's screws that line your tailgate panel. We'll just fast forward as Don removes each of those. Lift up your tailgate panel, and just set it aside. Then you want to remove the six 10mm bolts. We'll fast forward as Don removes those. Pull that metal cover off and put the soft cover aside. Then using a pair of pliers, you want to just lift up this clip right here, and the handle rod will pull out. Then you want to do the same to this right here, using a flat blade screwdriver just lift it up, and then push it off. Then you can pull that rod up and out. Then you want to remove these two 10mm bolts.

Now, you can pull your handle down and out. Now, you need to remove your lock to put into your new door handle. You just want to pry this clip back, we use a pick and a flat blade screwdriver. Then you can lift it up and off. Then just pull this arm off. Now you want to push on this tab with a flat blade screwdriver while pushing on the lock cylinder and it will pop out. You may find that that little tab can be frozen, so you can put it into a vice or something and just use your screwdriver and a small hammer and tap the tab. That usually frees it up. Then just push it into the bezel on your new tailgate handle, and reassemble the lock. You just want to put that clip on and slide it forward.

Now, feed your door handle back up into place. Replace those two 10mm bolts. For the bolt on the driver's side you're going to want to put it into the socket and feed it down into place. Now push this rod back into place and then slide that clip forward. Do the same thing for this one. Now put the soft cover and the hard cover back down into place, and replace those six 10mm bolts and tighten them up. Put the tailgate panel back down into place. We'll fast forward as Don replaces those Phillip's screws.
