How to repair, install, fix, change or replace a broken or snapped off tailgate cables on 17 Ram 1500

step 1 :Removing the Tailgate Cables
- Slide the tailgate up a little to create slack in the tailgate cable
- Unlatch the cable from the bed
- Remove the T45 Torx bolt from the cable

step 2 :Installing the Tailgate Cables
- Insert the tailgate cable into place
- Tighten the T45 Torx bolt to the cable
- Latch the cable to the bed

Alright we will open up this tailgate. You'll find a tailgate cable on each side. You can see right here, there's a tab. If you just bend this out of the way, you can actually just slide this up by lifting the tailgate. Get a little slack in the cable like this, and it slides up and out just like that. The other side will hold the tailgate up while you then come over here with your T45 Torx bit on a ratchet. Then you can use the ratchet and bit to undo this bolt. Alright and there you have it. Tailgate cable is removed.
To re-install, you're going to want to put it right back in here. You want to make sure your alignment washer is in here. That makes the tailgate cable twist in the right direction when you're closing the tailgate. Alright, up on the topside, you're going to need to raise your tailgate just a little bit. At that point, you can just slide it right on.
