Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace tailgate cables on this 2004 Chevy Colorado. It's the same as any '04-'12 Colorado or GMC Canyon. Tools you'll need include a T45 Torx driver, the type that fits on to a ratchet. You also may need a flat blade screwdriver and some needle nose pliers.
Pop your tailgate and you can see this cable here has seen some better day so T45 Torx driver, make sure it's in there well. New cable from 1A Auto. If you choose you want to put this on here, it just locks on like that. You can if you want put the bolt on and put this little locking washer in. That just holds the bolt in the right spot. We need to lift up the tailgate a little bit. Lift up the tailgate and start the bolt in. Once you tighten up the tailgate this should be nice and loose.
To remove the tailgate cable up here you have to lift up on the tailgate, pull this clip out and then lift that off. To install it just press it on and pull it down.
Here on the other side actually right into where that little locking clip that I put on the other side is inside the latch. It helps them assemble it on the assembly line and it gets caught up, so you may have to use your T45 and take the whole latch off and then pull it out. Even though it's in fast motion here or sped up a little bit. Use needle nose pliers and a screw driver. Basically grab on to that little locking clip on the back side and do everything you can. Pry it with the screwdriver and twist it with the pliers until it breaks off.
That's what you want to do is break that off. Okay we take our new cable and put it on up top here.
Like I said, if you want to you can put that little lock washer back together. You don't have to. They really just use that in the factory to put this together easily. The best way is to lift up.
