Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1A Auto. I want to help you save time and money repairing and maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20+ years experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly, that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.
In this video we're going to show you how to replace the rear sway bar bushings. The bushings between the sway bar and the rear end on this '98 Durango are the same as any '98 to '03 Durango and also same as any '97 to '07 Dakota. The only tool you'll need is a 15 mm socket and ratchet.
Up underneath the rear wheel, you can see these bushings have two bolts, one here in the back and then one up here in the front. What can happen is these bushings dry out and then fall apart. Then your stabilizer bar starts rattling. If you have a rattling in the rear end of your Durango or Dakota, check these bushings.
A little penetrating oil. Let them soak a little bit. 15 mm socket and ratchet. I like to go right from the back to the front ones. Now I'm going to jack up the opposite side a little bit. That will give me some space to pull the bushing off. Push it right up and pull it off. You can see this is actually in okay shape, so I will reinstall it. So you can see, here's the 1A Auto one. A little stiffer. It's going to install the same way.
To reinstall it, take it and put it over, then let the jack on the other side down. Put the bracket back on. Start this rear one first. There's a bracket for the emergency brake cable. Make sure we put that back into place. You can see here's our bracket and here's the bolt. We'll start that bolt. Once they're started, tighten them up. You want to get them nice and tight, anywhere from 45 to 50 foot pounds, which is tight. You don't have to torque it down.
