Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the rear sway bar on this 2003 Chevy Monte Carlo and it's the same part and similar process on these Monte Carlos from 2000 to 2007. The items you'll need for this are a new rear sway bar from 1AAuto.com; 15mm, 18mm, and 19mm socket and ratchet; 14mm wrenches; and jack and jack stands.
Loosen up the lug nut caps and pull your hub cap off. Then, remove the lug nuts and you want to loosen these while the vehicle's on the ground then raise the vehicle and remove them the rest of the way if you don't have air powered tools. Now just pull the wheel off.
Using a 14mm wrench on the back and an 18mm socket and ratchet, just remove this nut. Then, repeat the process down here, removing this nut and then your sway bar link will pull free. Then, remove the sway bar link from the driver's side as well.
Spray these two 15mm mount bolts with some penetrating oil and then, remove those bolts. Now, lift up on these mounts and unclip the rubber part. Do the same thing on this side. Now, slide your sway bar back and then just maneuver it down and out.
On the bottom, is the old sway bar; above it, is the new one from 1A Auto. You can see they're identical and they'll fit exactly the same. Feed the new sway bar back into place. Then, take your new mounts and just clip them on.
Now, replace your sway bar links and just twist the nuts on hand tight. This will help to hold the sway bar in place. Now, push it up into those mounts, with the rubber part of the mounts now installed on the sway bar. Just push the metal part down until you can get the bolt through and then replace that 15mm nut. You just want to put those on finger tight for now. Then you can turn your attention back to the links and tighten them up, again, just using a wrench to hold one side and socket and ratchet to tighten them up. Make sure you do all four nuts.
You want to put the weight back on the suspension before you tighten up the two mounts that mount it to the sub-frame so put jack stands underneath both sides and lower the vehicle down onto the jack stands so that it's in the ride position and tighten up those two nuts.
Replace your wheel. Then, replace the lug nuts and tighten them preliminarily. Then lower the vehicle and tighten them the rest of the way. Then torque each of these to 100 foot pounds in a crossing pattern. Replace your hub cap and tighten up these lug nut caps.
