In this video, we're going to show you how to replace a rear view mirror on this 2003 Volkswagen Passat Wagon. Pretty easy procedure. You need a Phillips screwdriver, a T25 Torx driver, and a T45 Torx driver.

Okay, on this door pull right back here, there's a piece, you kind of squeeze it and pull it back and out. Now, you just grab this and firmly try to work your fingernails under, pull it up and then disconnect your window switch right here. Now there are three Phillips screws to remove. One there and one there and there should be one there but it looks like somebody has taken it out and didn't put it back in. Underneath there's a couple of T25 Torx screws. You can see one right under there and again, there should be on right up under there but it's been removed. I'm going to fast forward as I remove those five. Well, in this car's case, it's only three screws but there should be five screws; the three Phillips and those screws are kind of a silver gold color. You're not removing the black ones from the door panel and then underneath the T25 Torx screws that hold the bottom of the panel to the door.

Once you have those screws out, you actually each kind of pull the bottom a little bit and then work your way around. It just needs to be released and lift the panel up. Once the panel gave away, there's a few things that needs to be done. Be very careful not to pull out too far your cable here. You should be able to pry it up and pull it out. This is going to part a couple of times so the cable is actually is kind of stuck in here. I can probably show you this afterwards. Get the cable out and then unhook that cable. There's a little connector here for your door lock an alarm and then you see the connector here for your door locks, push the tab down, disconnect that and down here, this connector is for your gas door and your other latch and then here is a connector for your courtesy light. All just have little tabs that you push on and disconnect and the panel comes off.

Just a close up on this cable. This is actually, this part is broken right here online because what happens it gets pulled out and then this gets broken, but you should pull it out a little bit, pull out a little bit then reach in here. Pull this part up and slide the cable back and then unhook this.

The mirror, you can carefully pull out. There are two pins here, pull it out and there's a third pin up here. You can just let that hanging down and then you follow this down and you can see your mirror connection, press the little tab right there. Let's have it on that side, disconnect. To remove your broken mirror, you need a T45 Torx driver. Once the bolts out pull the mirror right up and out. As you can see, my original mirror is in fine shape, so I'm going to reinstall it. The mirrors from 1A Auto we sell them. They usually just come in black. Obviously, you can install a black mirror and it's going to fix the problem if you have a broken one. The other thing you can do is if you want to paint it with the match your vehicle, what you want to do is go to a automotive part store in the Paint Department. They can help you match your paint color and put some paint in an air-charged spray can. You can finish it yourself and re-install it. Just to see how it's finished. You would want to tape off these black parts and then repaint it. As I said, a lot of these times, you probably just want to put the black one back on just to fix the issue and the mirrors from 1A Auto, they have the same plugs and everything. Again, mine is in fine shape so we're going to reinstall my original. Put that right through. Always from this inside, make sure your mirror is going on where you want it. You want this part of the mirror to kind of go underneath the strips. You push it in there and make sure it's all the way down underneath. Put our bolt in. Just fast forward as we put the bolt in and then tighten it up nice and firm. Bring our, this really shouldn't be locked right in there like that. Bring it down around. Plug it in. Reconnect it and then snap it back in place.

To reinstall, what we're going to do is way down here plug in our courtesy light first. Kind of figure out, this brown one, this is the power windows. These two go to our switches down here. This one comes all the way up to our power door lock, actually that's our mirror switch. That one and we just want to make sure it goes up here. This one comes in and it goes right here. What we want to do is to take our door latch cable and hook it in to the latch first and then you can pull this out and bring it around, get the cable into the slot, pull the cable into the slot and then push this in and lock in place. Okay, it seemed hard but it's easier to do when you're working on it. Put the door lock on there and hang the panel up and it goes the whole. The top of it goes into a slot in the weather strip here. Push it down on. I'll fast forward here as I tighten up the three Phillips screws. It should be in behind that door pull and the two T25 Torx screws that are underneath. Okay, reinstall the switch panel. Make sure it goes back down on. Then we'll put our locking panel back on.
