How to Replace Side Mirror 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero

step 1 :Disconnecting the Battery
- Disconnect your negative battery cable with an 8mm wrench

step 2 :Removing the Door Panel
- Pry off the trim piece inside the door pull with a flat blade screwdriver
- Remove the two Phillips screws in the door pull
- Pry off the mirror base trim piece with a flat blade screwdriver
- Disconnect the speaker wiring harness
- Pry off the reflector with a flat blade screwdriver
- Remove the Phillips screw underneath the reflector
- Pry out the door panel with a door panel clip tool or putty knife
- Lift the door panel up and off
- Disconnect the latch cables from the door handle
- Disconnect the lock switch wiring harness
- Disconnect the window switch wiring harness
- Disconnect the mirror switch wiring harness
- Disconnect the trunk switch wiring harness

step 3 :Removing the Side Rear View Mirror
- Remove the mirror insulation
- Disconnect the mirror wiring harness
- Remove the three 10mm nuts from the side mirror
- Remove the side mirror

step 4 :Installing the New Side Rear View Mirror
- Insert the mirror into place
- Tighten the 10mm bolts to the mirror
- Connect the mirror wiring harness
- Press on the insulation
- Connect the speaker wiring harness

step 5 :Reinstalling the Door Panel
- Connect the lock wiring harness
- Connect the mirror switch wiring harness
- Connect the window switch wiring harness
- Connect the trunk switch wiring harness
- Lift the door panel into place
- Push in the door panel clips
- Insert the two Phillips screws in the door pull
- Insert the Phillips screw underneath the reflector
- Press on the reflector
- Press on the trim piece inside the door pull
- Push on the mirror base trim piece

step 6 :Reconnecting the Battery
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with an 8mm wrench

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the side view/rear view mirror on this 2000 Oldsmobile Alero, same as any '99 to '04 two-door, and similar for the four-door as well. The tools you'll need include an 8mm wrench, small flat blade screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, and a 10mm socket with a ratchet extension.
Use an 8mm wrench and disconnect your negative battery cable.
You're going to start under your door pull. There's a trap door here. Either from the top or bottom, just pry that off. There are two Phillips screws in there. Then we'll speed it up here a little bit as I just remove those screws. I'll use fast-forward quite often when I'm just doing monotonous tasks like this. Okay, now right up here, you just pull on this panel. It comes off. If you have this speaker here, just use a screwdriver to pry up on this tab to disconnect it. Also, down in this corner, use a little screwdriver and pull this reflector out. Inside here, there's a Phillips screw.
Okay, let's move that out. With a door panel clip tool or putty knife, let's start anywhere. Slide it in there and slide it until you feel a clip. With a door panel clip tool, you can go around the clip and then pull. That screw comes out. Put it in the car. See back in here, see the clips. Then just work your way all the way around the door. Okay, once you have the door pretty loose, it comes out and lifts up.
The door lock should be back on this tab. Disconnect it. Then these two switches have tabs on them. I'm just going to reach underneath and pull that one off. This mirror switch is a little more difficult. There's a tab right here, use my little screwdriver. Watch that. I just take my Phillips screwdriver, force it up in there, and pry that down. That's released. Then my last one here is my trunk switch, which again, just use your screwdriver to pop the tab right here. Pull it off. Pull this piece of insulation out. Your mirror hooks in right here. This little tab, pull it back, the lead comes out. Three 10mm nuts here. I'll fast-forward here, as I remove those three nuts that hold it in place. Then your old mirror, or what's left of it, comes off.
Here's a new mirror from 1A Auto. It comes molded in black. It's going to go on to make a functional replacement. If you wanted to repaint your mirror to match, obviously, you want to do that before-hand. You can be as crude as just getting some paint that matches pretty well from a hardware store and doing it that way, or you can take your vehicle to an automotive parts store that has a paint department, and they can probably match the paint pretty well, put it in an air-charged can, and then you can refinish it yourself.
Putting it back together is pretty easy. Put it in place, start the nuts on. I'll fast-forward it here again as I start those nuts on. I'll preliminarily tighten them, then just check the alignment of the mirror and tighten them up nice and firm. You don't want to over-tighten them, though. Put your harness, reconnect it there. Put your insulation right back in.
Find the narrow lock switch right up here. Then our mirror, power windows switch, this one goes down to our trunk switch. Then actually push the top door panel in. Make sure this speaker lead is up out of there. Push the door panel down into that channel. You have to use your putty knife or clip tool to kind of force the upholstery in there a little bit. Peak back in here, make sure your pins are hanging where they should. Fast-forward through reinstalling those three Phillips screws. Put your reflector back in and put this panel back on. Plug back in your lead there. Then reconnect your negative battery cable.
