Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how to video helps you out and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we will show you how to replace a mirror. We show you the driver side, the passenger sides are the same. It's a '97 VW Jetta. This is basically the same for any '93 to 98 Jetta. This vehicle's a GL so it does not have power windows. If you have power windows the procedure's a little bit different. Tools you'll need are a small flat blade screwdriver, a small Phillips screwdriver and a regular size Phillips screwdriver as well as a T10 Torx driver. The majority of this repair is just getting the door panel off and then back on.
To remove your door panel you're going to start by there's a small ring down here at the base of your window crank. If you have manual windows, push the ring towards the bottom of the crank and the crank comes off. You're going to see that ring how it just locks on like that. I can actually relock it and put it back together. This knob actually pulls off. Pull it pretty firmly. That pulls off and then a small flat blade screwdriver. Carefully pry out your speaker grill. Pull that off. Pry out on the bottom of this triangle and then put the screwdriver in and pull and pry it firmly. Release the triangle. Once it comes off you're going to have to get these plastic grommets off of this and then push the little legs back in and remount them into the holes. Your larger one. The smaller one's always a little harder to get off.
Sometimes I'm successful getting that grommet off but I actually just broke that smaller pin. Not the best thing but this'll go back together even without that smaller pin. It has two tabs down here and the larger tab there. The next thing is you can start back here with a screwdriver and more from down here and start working this loose here. Lifting right in from there. Just pull on this whole plastic bezel, comes off. Now you've got a small Phillips screw you want to remove, two larger Phillips screws, one there and one right in there. Then there's the four Phillips screws around your speaker you want to remove. Then there are six T10 screws around the parameter, one here, one further down. There are two underneath, one in the front, one towards the rear. Then again two in the back here. You'll also want to take and remove your lock knob.
To remove the Torx screws around the outer edge you need a T10 Torx driver. We got the style that fits on a ratchet. These are usually a little hard to get to. I start up in the front with the ratchet and socket to get those front ones out and then you'll see I kind of switch to a screwdriver style handle with that T10 Torx bit and take the other four out. Now a small screwdriver for this screw up here and a regular screwdriver for the rest of the screws.
Again, I'm going to use a little bit of fast forward here as I take all those Phillips screws out. You need to pull the top out as well and the screws that are kind of staying there will come out. Pull it off the door lock and your door lock is just connected right here. Just squeeze and pull down, it comes off. To remove the mirror, pull this pad off and there are three screws. There's also a screw that holds your controller here. Use a smaller screwdriver. You pry here and slide it forward. That comes up and out. Then there are three screws to hold the mirror on here.
Once those screws are out then pull off the mirror or whatever might remain of the mirror. Foam pad will pull out from the outside. Pull that out. It makes it difficult to get this out. There's your mirror out. Here's your mirror from 1A Auto. See, it's just like the original. It has a remote control and everything. I'm going to take my foam pad, put the controller through. Stuff that insulation back in there. Put my mirror in place. This just has teeth in it but the teeth just go in the door and then push it backwards into place.
I'm going to fast forward here as I just put the other two screws in and tighten them up. You might need to just kind of shove that foam pad around with your finger to make sure it's not in the way. One thing I forget to do before I start putting the door panel on, you want to put the small screw back into where the remote control mounts the door. Also put that foam pad back in where the mirror mounts. It's not too big of a deal, you'll see me do it with the door panel in place but two things that can help you do it a little easier.
Begin putting the door panel back together. Make sure your security light's back up in there. Get the lock stud brought up through. The top goes in and make sure its all in flush. Before you get too far, make sure you put this pad in there. The little screw for the mirror first. Small screw right up here. I'm just going to fast forward and commentate as I go through. The two screws that hold the door pull in place, put those in. Then the speaker has a small round pin at the bottom and a square peg at the top. Make sure you line those up properly on the speaker.
Put the speaker back in place and the four screws back in place. Then put the speaker grill back in place. Put your window crank back in place. The trim around the door handle, put that back in place. The knob for the mirror back in place. The triangle for the top back in place and then the six screws - the T10 screws that hold the door panel on the parameter, start those in place first and then tighten those up and you're all set. Also don't forget to put that lock knob back on.
