Brought to you by 1AAuto.com, your source for quality replacement parts and the best service on the Internet. Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how to video helps you out and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. In this video, we'll show you how to replace a serpentine belt tensioner on this 2003 Volkswagen Passat and this vehicle has the 1.8 liter T motor, it has a turbo motor. The only tools you'll need are a 17 millimeter wrench and a 13 millimeter wrench. In this video we just showed you replacing the tensioner itself.
If you wanted to replace the belt at the same time which is usually a good thing to do, you can check out our other videos and you'll see a video for replacing the serpentine belt on this vehicle as well. The tensioner for your alternator belt is right up here, 17 millimeter wrench, put it on there and pull on the tensioner and flip the belt off and let the tensioner back. There are three 13 millimeter bolts here. My 13 millimeter wrench on there. Here's my 17 millimeter giving me a little extra leverage. We'll just loosen that off. I'm just going to speed it up as I loosen the third one up. Then, these bolts actually pretty easily come up by hand and so that's basically what I'm doing here is once I have them loosen up just backing them out by hand. This one goes off and tensioner comes up right up and out.
New tensioner from 1A Auto. This is a great one. What I'm going to do is put these bolts into place. This makes it a little easier to get it down on there. Put the tensioner down into place here. That top bolt going in. I have two bolts going in and hand thread it in. Once again, I'll turn on the speed here as I thread those bolts in and then pull them narrowly, tighten them up with the wrench. I'm going to tighten them up. Just use your wrench. It should probably be about three, three to five pounds but we're going to tighten it with this wrench. This will do the trick. The new tensioner does come with a little stop in it so we'll put our 17 millimeter wrench on there, pull on a little bit and pull that stopper on right out. Then, slowly let back. Now, you can see that belt sticking right up through there. I'm going to grab onto my tensioner, that 17 millimeter. Pull it loose. Pull the belt right up onto the alternator, let the tensioner loose so I can see it now. My bolt actually came off of that power. Reach down there. Is that on there? Let it tight up. Just look down in see down, cranked correctly. The power straightened up correctly. It's maybe a little off here. Push it on the points a little bit more and it's all set.
