    Trim Tool Set

Hi, I’m Mike from 1A Auto. We’ve been selling auto parts for over 30 years!

We're going to remove this lower inside tailgate trim. We're going to start by popping out these cargo lights by pushing in the plastic trim tool. You can get these from 1AAuto.com. Just kind of go in this side, pop it down, and push the lock in. Pull it out of the lamp, and I’ll put that lamp aside so I can reuse it. Do the same for the other side. Put that aside.

Now you get these four push clips out of here. So a good little tip: these push clips that have a flesh head to them. You can actually push them in. Seems counter-intuitive, but you push them in and then you can pry them out. I'm just going to pop these pockets out—these little grab handle pockets. Just going to take the plastic prying tool. Put it in the top, and they'll pop right out. Repeat this with the other side, and pull it right out.

Take my prying tool, kind of wedge it in the gap here. Pry it down, and pop it off the clips. Work my way around… all right, let me go do the other side. Do the same thing: just kind of work it in there and pry it down. You basically just have to snap all the clips free, and that'll come right out.

To remove this inner light assembly that has the backup light in it, you've got to have the trim removed. There are three 10 millimeter nuts that are holding it in: the one here, here, and then over here. There's also the electrical connector for it, which is here. So I'm going to start by unplugging it. There’s a lock at the top, push that in, pull the connector out. I'll take my 10 millimeter deep socket and ratchet, and start removing these nuts.

If you remove the three nuts that are on the studs, there's also a clip that's somewhere in here holding this on. You basically just have to pry it off. I'm going to use a plastic prying tool and slide it in here. There it is, so it's on this little clip here, and it's makes it pretty tricky. You want to change the bulb—you don't have to pop this grommet out. Or if you want to remove this whole assembly, you can reach in from behind, push this grommet out of the body, and leave the harness out.

Let this go up, so we here we have the reverse light assembly. I'm actually going to pop the wires out of this little clip here. That way I can pull the harness straight out, so I unlock it, pull it straight out, so there's your reverse light bulb. It is a 921. To replace it you just pull it right out, plug the new one in, and put it back in here. Turn it in the direction of that arrow to lock it, put the harness back under here, and place this back in the body.

Feed the harness through here. I'm going to push and make sure that rubber grommet seals. You don't want to get water in the car. That's seated. I'm going to line up our studs with the holes again and slide it in place. This will be the same for both sides. Going to reinstall the 10 millimeter nuts and the studs. I'm just going to snug these, they don't need a lot of twerk, you don't want to break them, just like that. You can see looking at the backside this grommet is seated in there, because we don't want any water leaks. Now we can plug the tail light, plug the reverse light back in to the harness here. I'm going to put this back into place, we also need to feed these wires out for the lights. Reach up, those are going to go in here. I am going to line those up like that.

Grab this one down here, and then I can get this settled up like this, and I can start to push these ends in. Just like that, okay. I'll go right along the edge, just push all the clips back in. Take our push clips and put them back into place. Push them back out like that, and that's going to work. Push them back in. These handles are marked up. Place that in the up direction, and same for the other side. We plug our lights back in, just like that. Slide them back up into place, they'll snap in and it works again. Do that for the other side, plug it in and so you can tell the whiter part is where this wide parts going to go. Because these are both the same, left and right. So pop it in just like that.
