Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the rear wiper motor on this 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It's the same part and similar process on these Cherokees from '93 to '98. The items that you'll need for this are a new rear motor from 1AAuto.com, an 8mm and 13mm socket and ratchet with an extension, a 1" wrench, and a Phillips screwdriver.
Around the rear lift gate panel there's 14 Phillips screws. We're just going to use a drill to speed up the process, but you want to go ahead and remove all of those. There are two screws embedded in the carpet in the lower corners of the tailgate. Now, you want to pull down on the panel to release the clips. Once you get it started you can look up there and try to see where the next clip is and pull down on either side of the clip. Eventually they'll just start popping free and you can pull the panel down and aside.
Lift up that cap and then remove this 13mm nut. Remove that cap and then push in and out on the wiper arm until it pops free. We're going to spray this nut with some penetrating fluid to just help break it free. Then using a 1" wrench, just break that nut free and loosen it up. You just want to go ahead and remove that. Now your wiper motor is held in with two 8mm bolts. Just go ahead and remove each of those. Pull the motor down and push the tab on the harness, and disconnect it.
On the left, is the old wiper motor. On the right, is the new one from 1AAuto.com. You can see they're identical and they'll fit exactly the same. Take your new wiper motor and feed it up into place. Then replace those screws. We'll just tighten them up preliminarily. You only want to tighten them about half way just to hold the motor in place. Then reconnect your harness and now you can tighten them up the rest of the way.
Now line up the clips on the panel and then just hit them back into place. Just do this all the way around the panel. Then replace those Phillips screws and the two longer screws that you'll have go in the top of the panel.
Now replace that 1" nut and tighten it back up. Cycle the rear wiper motor a couple times so you know it's in the off position. Then put your wiper arm back in place, and then replace the 13mm nut and tighten it up. Now just replace this cap and you're all set.
