How to Replace Rear Sway Bar Bushings 2000-06 Chevy Tahoe

Created on: 2020-06-11

Watch this video to learn how to install a new sway bar and bushing kit on your 2000-06 Chevy Tahoe.

Tools needed

  • Torque Wrench

    Gloves

    18mm Wrench

    Pry Bar

    18mm Socket

    Air Compressor

    10mm Socket

    Swivel

    Safety Glasses

    1/2 Inch Impact Gun

    22mm Socket

Now, I'm going to take a 22-millimeter socket, take these lug nuts off. I'm gonna take this wheel off, and now take the other side wheel off. Now we're going to disconnect the links on both sides. This link, for the stud, I'll use an 18-millimeter wrench to hold the stud from spinning in an 18-millimeter socket to take the nut off.

Do the same on the other side. Now, before I take the links off, I'm actually going to take the bushings out. Use a 10-millimeter socket. There's two bolts on this side and then two on the other. Just hold the bar so it doesn't hit you by accident.

There we go. And just slide this down. Just get these parking brake cables out of the way. And you can slide this over, if you have to use a pry bar, and slide it off the link, and slide it off the other link. Just slide it up. And I'll take this bar, slide it around the parking brake cable, and slide it over the sway bar link.

Line up this sway bar link. You can use the pry bar if you need to. Just be careful. That lined up. That's good. Now take these bushings, take the bracket off and slide the bushing over, and then slide the bracket. I will do the same on the other side. And get the bolts started. And do the same on the other side. I'll go back and snug these all up.

Now, we can torque these bolts to 24 foot-pounds. Now, install the nut, use my 18-millimeter wrench, and then snug this up. Then torque this nut to 48 foot-pounds. Do the same on the other side. Take the wheel, put the wheel back on. Put the lug nuts back on. I'm gonna tighten these lug nuts to 140 foot-pounds in a cross pattern or star pattern so that it tightens the wheel down evenly. And I'll just go around again double-check.
