step 1 :Removing the Wheel
- Pry off the center cap with the Audi pick removal tool
- Loosen the 17mm lug nuts with the vehicle on the ground
- Raise the vehicle with a floor jack
- Secure the vehicle on jack stands
- Remove the lug nuts
- Pull off the wheel

step 2 :Removing the Shock
- Jack up underneath the control arm to support the suspension
- Remove the 21mm nut from the shock with a 21mm wrench and socket
- Pry the shock from the control arm
- Lower the jack
- Remove the two 13mm bolts
- Pull the shock down and out

step 3 :Installing the New Shock
- Insert the shock into place
- Tighten the 13mm bolts to the top of the shock
- Tighten the 13mm bolts to 27 foot-pounds
- Jack up the control arm to line up the suspension
- Tighten the 21mm nut to the bottom of the shock
- Torque the nut to 110 foot-pounds and 1/4 turn
- Lower the jack

step 4 :Reattaching the Wheel
- Slide the wheel into place
- Start the lug nuts by hand
- Tighten the lug nuts preliminarily
- Lower the vehicle to the ground
- Tighten the lug nuts to 90 foot-pounds in a crossing or star pattern
- Reattach the center cap

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the rear shocks on this 2007 Audi A4. It's the same procedure for many of this generation A4, and we're going to show you on the driver side. Passenger side is the same procedure. Items you'll need include a center cap removal tool or 90 degree pick, 17 to 21mm sockets, ratchet and extensions, a breaker bar or tire iron, and 13 to 21mm wrenches, torque wrench, and jack and jack stands.
Start by removing the wheel. Remove the center cap. For this vehicle, you need the special tool which we sell under VWXXX0001. You could also, if you have one in your toolbox, use a pick tool. Remove the cap and remove your five 17mm lug bolts. If you don't have the benefit of air tools, loosen the lug bolts on the ground with your tire iron a 17mm socket with a breaker bar, then raise and support the vehicle, remove the lug bolts the rest of the way, and remove the wheel and tire.
We're going to disconnect the bottom of the shock, so we're just going to jack it up a little bit and support the suspension, make sure the shock isn't holding it up. 21mm wrench, get it in, and put it on the backside nut on the shock. We've got our 21mm wrench in place Take a 21mm socket, breaker bar, and remove this. Once it comes loose it's pretty easy, but we're going to change over to air tools.
We're going to pry the shock from the control arm, and then you can slowly let your suspension down the rest of the way. Top of the shock is held on by two 13mm bolts. We're using an extension and a ratchet. You don't have to remove the inner liner. Pull it down, and you can push it down to compress it. Pull it up and out.
Reinstall our shock. Put the bottom in place. You might want to just compress it a little bit to help pop it in. Rear one's always the easiest. Put the bolt through, stretch that a little bit, feed the bolt up into place, and make sure your extension's going straight up and down so you're putting the bolt in straight. Torque these to 27 foot-pounds.
Here's our mounting hole, there's the shock. Just need to lift the suspension up so that they line up. Get that in, then the square washer, and the nut on the other side. Next, what you want to do is get your car in the curb position the best you can, so I'm lifting it up so that there's very little weight on the lift, which gets the suspension in the right spot, and we're going to torque this to 110 foot-pounds and then 1/4 turn, and let the suspension down. Tighten them preliminarily. Torque your lug nuts to 90 foot-pounds using a star pattern. Line the largest area between the slots, the largest area between the tabs.
