How to Replace Rear Brake Caliper 2000-06 Chevy Suburban

How to repair, install, fix, change or replace your own worn, squeaky, fading old rear brake calipers on 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, Chevy Suburban, or Tahoe; or GMC Yukon.

If you have air-powered tools, you can raise the vehicle before loosening the lug nuts
step 1 :Removing the Wheel
- Loosen the lug nuts
- Raise the vehicle with a floor jack
- Secure the vehicle on jack stands
- Remove the lug nuts
- Pull off the wheel

step 2 :Inspecting the Brakes
- Turn the rotor by hand or turn the steering wheel to turn the rotor
- Check the thickness of the brake pads
- Check the brake pad wear indicator
- Check for gouges on both sides of the rotor

step 3 :Removing the Brake Caliper
- Remove two 12mm bolts from the brake caliper
- Use either a C-clamp to squeeze the rotor or a screwdriver to pry the brake caliper off
- Pry the brake pads off with a flat blade screwdriver
- Use a piece of pipe to remove two 18mm bolts from the caliper bracket

step 4 :Preparing the Brake Caliper
- Pull the slides out from the old caliper bracket
- Apply brake grease to the caliper slides
- Slide the caliper slides into the caliper bracket
- Swap the brake pad slides

step 5 :Replacing the Caliper Bracket
- Put the caliper bracket into place using two 18mm bolts
- Torque the 18mm bolts to 85 ft/lbs
- Push the brake pads back into place
- Put the caliper back into place and replace the two 12mm bolts
- Torque the 12mm bolts to 30ft/lbs

step 6 :Reattaching the Wheel
- Slide the wheel into place
- Start the lug nuts by hand
- Tighten the lug nuts preliminarily
- Lower the vehicle to the ground
- Torque each lug nut to 100 ft/lbs in a crossing pattern
- Replace the hubcap and tighten each lug nut cover

step 7 :Testing the Brakes
- Pump your brakes repeatedly until they feel firm
- Test your brakes at 5 miles per hour and then 10 miles per hour
- Road test the vehicle

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the rear brake caliper bracket on this 2002 Chevy Suburban, and it's the same part and similar process on these Suburbans from 2000-2006. We show you on the passenger's side, but the driver's side has the same procedure. The items you'll need for this include a new brake caliper bracket from 1AAuto.com, a 12mm, 18mm, and 22mm socket and ratchet with a piece of pipe for leverage, a flat blade screwdriver, a large C-clamp, a torque wrench, brake grease, and jack and jack stands.
Start off by loosening up these lug nut covers, and we'll fast forward as Don does this. Once those are all loosened up, you can pull the hubcap free. Now, you want to loosen the lug nuts preliminarily, and raise the vehicle and remove them the rest of the way. Unless you have air powered tools, you can do it while it's up in the air. Then to inspect your brakes, just run your finger along the rotor and check for any deep grooves. You can look in here for the life of this brake pad, and then through here for the life of the other brake pad. Now, remove these two 12mm bolts. We'll fast forward as Don does that. Now, use a large C-clamp. You just put it on this end on the back of the caliper, and on this brake pad, and just twist it in. This is going to push the caliper piston in and make it easier to pull the caliper up and off.
Now, remove the large C-clamp. Pull the caliper free and set it aside. Now, pry out the brake pads. Now, remove these two 18mm bolts, and just use a piece of pipe to help break it free. Now, we'll just fast forward as Don removes those two bolts. Now, pull your caliper bracket off. You want to pull your slides out so you can put them into your new caliper bracket. Ours completely seized up so we just have to get new ones.
On your left you can see the old caliper bracket; on the right is a new one from 1A Auto. You can see that they're identical and they're going to fit exactly the same. Take your old caliper slides (or your new ones), and just apply brake grease to them. Then slide them into you caliper bracket. You want to swap over your brake pad slides, and if your old ones are in bad shape you should get new ones, which we do sell at 1AAuto.com. Just push them into place, put your caliper bracket back into place, and replace those two 18mm bolts. We'll fast forward as Don tightens those up. You want to torque these to about 85 foot-pounds.
Push your brake pads back into place. Put your caliper back down into place and replace those two 12mm bolts. Now, we'll just fast forward as Don does this and tightens them up. You want to tighten these to about 30 foot-pounds. Put your wheel back into place. Then replace your lug nuts and tighten them preliminarily. We'll fast forward as Don does this. Lower the vehicle and torque the lug nuts to 100 foot-pounds in a crossing pattern. Replace that hubcap and tighten up each of your lug nut covers. Before taking the vehicle out on the road, you want to just pump the brake pedal until it firms up and then try a stopping test from five miles per hour and ten miles per hour. You're all set.
