Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the rear wheel sensor in this 2003 Honda Civic two door, and we show you on the passenger side. The driver's side is a similar procedure. You'll need 10 and 19 millimeter sockets with ratchet extension, a 10 millimeter wrench, hammer, Phillips head screwdriver, lug wrench, torque wrench and jack and jack stands.
Remove your negative battery clamp and place the cable to the side. Use a breaker bar or your tire iron and loosen the lug nuts while the tire is on the ground. Now raise and support the vehicle. Now remove the lug nuts the rest of the way and the wheel and tire.
Remove the carpet from the floor of your trunk and the cover below it. Your wheel speed sensor connection is made under this steel cover. Remove the two Phillips head plastic retainers and remove the cover to the clips. Disconnect the car side of your harness.
Use your screwdriver to push this rubber retainer down to the floor. Remove the 10 millimeter bolt on the back of the wheel speed sensor. We already sprayed our sensor down, but we're going to add just a little more penetrating oil. Make sure it comes out smoothly. Try to wiggle it out with a flat head screwdriver or a small pry bar. Remove the two 10 millimeter bolts at the rear of the heat shield. Allow the heat shield to hang down. Undo the two 10 millimeter bolts for the wheel speed wire harness retainers. Now you can remove the harness and wheel speed sensor from the vehicle.
We brought our vehicle up on the lift. You'll need to raise and support it to get underneath and install your wheel speed sensor connector end through this hole above the heat shield. Go ahead and collapse that rubber grommet. Push it through with the screwdriver. Careful not to stab the sensor.
Now we'll reinstall our bracket with the 10 millimeter bolt. Reposition your heat shield. Go ahead and bolt that back in too. We had a bolt break here, and since there's not a lot of pressure or force on this bracket, we're just going to go ahead and zip-tie it back into place. Go ahead and clip the tails off.
Reinstall your wheel speed sensor into the backing plate. If you can't press it in by hand, you can use some kind of rubber or plastic punch. We just used the backside of a screwdriver and a hammer.
Now you're ready to reinstall your 10 millimeter bolt. Reinstall the grommet into the floor. You may need to use a screwdriver. Just be careful not to push it all the way through.
Reconnect your sensor. Reinstall your protective cover. Plastic screws will usually just push right back into place. Reinstall the baseboard in your trunk and your carpet.
Reinstall the wheel. Your four 19 millimeter lug nuts. Torque your four lug nuts to 84 pounds in a cross pattern. Reinstall your negative battery cable and tighten the clamp.
