Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1A Auto. I want to help you save time and money repairing or maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20-plus years experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly: that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.
In this video, we're going to show you how to remove and replace a radiator overflow or the coolant tank bottle on this 2004 Dodge Intreprid. The tools you'll need are pretty basic: a 10mm and 13mm socket and ratchet or a wrench, pliers, and a large screw driver or pry bar.
Here's a new radiator overflow bottle from 1A Auto. You can see this hose here just connects to itself. There's a hose connected here and hose down here. Other than that it's all the same shape as our original. The original in this car is still in good shape so I'm not going to remove and replace it because I don't have to drain the fluid. Usually what happens with these is they are under pressure so they can expand and then they can crack, and then they leak.
To remove, you need a pair of pliers. There's a clamp here. Open that up. Then twist this hose and pull it off. Then you're going to need to remove three 13mm bolts: one here, and here, and here. This is the strut tower brace. I'm not really happy with the design of it because there's really no reason it has to interfere with the radiator or the overflow bottle like it does, but whoever designed it, I don't think did a very good job. Remove these three 13mm bolts. Change to a 10mm socket and remove the bolts that hold the radiator bottle in. You may want to use a screwdriver to pry this brace up and out of the way, but probably you can just . . What I'm doing here is just kind of prying up with the screwdriver and grabbing the bolt with my hand. Now, you just pull your bottle like that. Put this hose down and around and kind of come up. You can pull your bottle up and there's plenty of hose here so now you can get your pliers on down here and do the same thing, pull this clamp back, remove this hose, then connect it on to the new one.
Like I said, I'm not going to put the new one in because there's not a problem with this one. Put that hose back down there, put your bottle into place, put your washer hose up and around. Get your coolant bottle underneath that strut brace. Start that bolt. Get that out of the way, and get that started. Do the same thing over here. Start the bolt and take your screwdriver, just bend that brace out of the way. The long bolt goes back here; the short bolts go here. Change back to the 13mm socket. Just force those bolts into place. Make sure your washer hose is mounted correctly. Take your hose, put it back on and you're all set. If it bothers you, take a little hammer, reset those things. Obviously at this point, you would refill your coolant tank to the proper level.
