How to Replace Power Window Motor 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero

step 1 :Disconnecting the Battery
- Disconnect the negative battery cable with an 8mm wrench

step 2 :Removing the Door Panel
- Pry off the screw cover inside the door pull with a flat blade screwdriver
- Remove the two Phillips head screws inside the door pull
- Pry off the mirror base trim panel by hand
- Disconnect the speaker wiring harness with a flat blade screwdriver
- Pry off the reflector with a flat blade screwdriver
- Remove the Phillips screw behind the reflector
- Pry out the door panel with a door panel clip tool or a putty knife
- Lift the door panel up and off
- Disconnect the door lock wiring harness
- Disconnect the window switch wiring harness
- Disconnect the mirror switch wiring harness
- Disconnect the trunk switch wiring harness
- Carefully, peel back the water shield

step 3 :Replacing the Window Motor
- Disconnect the window motor wiring lead
- Remove the three 10mm bolts from the window motor
- Pull off the window motor

step 4 :Installing the New Window Motor
- Put the new window motor into place
- Start the three 10mm bolts into the window motor
- Tighten the three 10mm bolts
- Connect the window motor wiring lead

step 5 :Reinstalling the Door Panel
- Put the water shield back into place
- Connect the door lock wiring harness
- Connect the mirror switch wiring harness
- Connect the window switch wiring harness
- Connect the trunk switch wiring harness
- Lift the door panel into place
- Move the upholstery aside, if necessary
- Push in the door panel clips
- Insert the two Phillips screws inside the door pull
- Insert the Phillips screw behind the reflector
- Push the reflector into place
- Press the screw cover into the door pull
- Connect the speaker wiring harness
- Push on the mirror base trim panel

step 6 :Reconnecting the Battery
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with an 8mm wrench

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace a window motor. This is a 2000 Alero two-door. We're going to do the driver's door. The process is basically the same for the passenger's door as well as pretty much the same for the front doors on a four-door. Usually, with your window motor, the signs of it going bad are the window just stops. Maybe it stops in one direction first and then the next direction. That's usually the sign that your window motor is burnt out. Tools you'll need are an 8 millimeter wrench, small flat blade screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, and a 10 millimeter socket and ratchet with extension.
Use an 8 millimeter wrench and disconnect your negative battery cable.
You start under your door pull. There's a kind of trap door here and either from the top or bottom, just pry that off and there's two Phillips screws in there. We'll just speed up here a little bit as I just remove those screws. I'll use fast forward quite often when I'm just doing monotonous tasks like this. Right here, you just pull on this panel and it comes off. If you have this speaker here, just use a screwdriver to pry up on this tab and disconnect it. Also, down in this corner, use a little screwdriver and pull this reflector out. Inside here, there's a Phillips screw. Once you have that out, use a door panel clip tool or a putty knife and start anywhere underneath and then slide it until you feel a clip. With the door panel clip tool, you go around the clip and then pull. That screw comes out. Put it in the car. You see back in here, just see where the clips are and then work your way all the way around the door. Once you have the door pretty loose, it comes out and lifts up. The door lock should be back on this tab. Disconnect it and then these two switches just have tabs on them. I'm just going to reach underneath, pulling that one off. This one near the switch is a little more difficult. There's a tab right here. Use a little screwdriver. I just have to put my screwdriver, force it up in there, pry that down and that's released and then the last one here is my trunk switch. What you got to do is just use your screwdriver. There's a locking tab here. Then, carefully take the water shield off. Mine has been off before, so it came off pretty easy.
To replace your power window motor, it's right here. Disconnect the lead first, by pressing up on the tab pulling that out. Then, you can use three 10 millimeter bolts and remove them. Speed it up here as we remove those three 10 millimeter mounting bolts. Because my window is down, you can see that my motor kind of spun a little bit and the motor comes out.
My original motor is fine. The only difference on the 1A motors is sometimes they have a little pigtail but that's not that big of a deal. Put the motor back in, very easy. Make sure you get all bolts in and start it. We'll speed it up here a little bit. You always want to start all three of them in. Make sure they're threading in, and then tighten them up nice and firm afterwards. We connect the harness.
Speed it up here as we just put that water shield back in place and try and get it as close to where it was before as possible. Plug in our lock switch right up here and our mirror, then the power window switch, and this will go down to our trunk switch and then make sure you push the top of the panel in. Make sure this speaker lead is up out of there. Push the door panel down into that channel. You may have to use your putty knife or some kind of clip tool that kind of force the upholstery in there a little bit. Now peek back in here. Make sure your pins are going in where they should. Fast forward through reinstalling those three Phillips screws. Put your reflector back in. Put this panel back on. Plug it back in here. Put that back on.
Then reconnect your negative battery cable.
