How to Replace Outer Tail Light and Bulb 2005-10 Volkswagen Jetta

How to install, repair, fix, change or replace a broken, damaged, burned out, cracked, faded, cloudy or chipped outer tail light / brake light on 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10 Volkswagen Jetta.

step 1 :Servicing the Bulbs
- Pull out the flap on the panel in the trunk
- Pull out the tab on the socket assembly
- Remove the socket assembly
- Pull the bulb off of the socket
- Push on the new bulb
- Push the socket assembly into the light

step 2 :Removing the Tail Light Assembly
- Disconnect the wiring harness from the socket assembly
- Remove the two 10mm bolts from the tail light
- Remove the tail light from the vehicle

step 3 :Installing the New Tail Light Assembly
- Align the bolts on the tail light with the bolt holes on the vehicle
- Tighten the two 10mm bolts to the tail light
- Connect the socket assembly wiring harness
- Close the flap

In this video, we're going to show you how to service the bulbs as well as replace the entire outer taillight assembly on this 2005 Volkswagen Jetta. We show you on the passenger side, but the driver side is the same procedure. It's the same part and similar process on these Jettas from 2005 to 2007. The items you'll need for this procedure is a new outer tail light from 1AAuto.com, and a 10mm socket and ratchet.
On the back of your tail light in the trunk you'll see these flaps. Just pull this back. Then push up on the tabs on the socket assembly. Then the sockets will pull out.
To service the bulbs, you just push in and twist it counterclockwise and it will pull out. Take your new bulb, push it in, and twist it clockwise to lock it in. This bulb's the same procedure. Then you just push those back into place.
If you're looking to replace the entire assembly, just push the tabs on this harness, disconnect it from the socket, and put the sockets aside. Then remove these two 10mm nuts. We'll just fast-forward as Mike does that. Now pull the tail light assembly free.
On the left is the old tail light assembly; on the right is the new one from 1A Auto. You can see you're identical and they'll fit exactly the same.
Take your new tail light and feed back into place. We'll fast-forward as Mike replaces those two 10mm nuts and tightens them up. Now reconnect the harness to the sockets. Then push the sockets back into the tail light. Close this flap, and you're all set.
