How to Replace Outer Tail Light 2010-13 Chevy Camaro

In this video, we're going to be working with our 2011 Chevy Camaro. We're going to show you how to remove and replace your outer taillight housing and the bezel that goes around it. We're doing this on the passenger side, but the procedure is the same on the driver side. If you like this video, please click subscribe. Here are the items you'll need for this repair.

Remove the three plastic tabs. This is called the tail lamp closeout panel. We'll use a trim tool for this. You can use the plastic one or I have a steel one here. You can also do this with a pair of needle nose pliers or a flat blade screwdriver. Just lift the center tab up. You don't need to remove it fully. Then pop the base of it out. We'll do the same thing on the other two. Remove the closeout panel.

To remove your tail lamp bezel, I like to use a plastic trim tool. A lot of people use a flat blade screwdriver for this, which isn't so bad for the top, but you'll see when we get along the sides on the bottom, we actually pry against the lens like this. These plastic trim tools are actually pretty rigid, so they do a pretty good job of pulling these out without risking using a metal tool like a screwdriver, which could crack or scratch your taillight lenses. Just carefully work that out all the way around and you've got your taillight bezel off.

The tab to release the electrical connector is on the bottom where my index finger is now. Pinch that and remove it. We then have three of these 10mm bolts securing the lens in: one here and then two that you can't see. You have to feel for them back inside the fender. Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the nuts on the back of the taillight. I can't get onto the bottommost bolt on the tail lamp with a socket, but these really don't have a lot of tension on them, so I'm just going to go in there with a wrench and try to get a turn or two to loosen the nut. Then you should be able to take it the rest of the way out by hand.

Here we have our old taillight that we removed from our vehicle and our new part from 1AAuto.com. As you can see, the lenses are exactly the same. We have nice, new, clear, bright red on there. The old one's kind of scuffed up, a little beat up. We have the locating tabs on the top and bottom, and when we pull these little covers off here, we have the same three screws already installed on our taillight. If your old taillight is broken, faded, cracked or building moisture, included in the taillight set, we have a new taillight bezel as well. The difference really speaks for itself there. These have been on there for six or seven years now. We have a brand new one, nice, bright, shiny chrome. Looks a lot better than what's in there, and this comes with your tail lamp. When you replace that, not only do you get the nice, new look of your new taillight, but you also have a brand new bezel on there to really freshen up the whole look of the back of the car.

Install your new taillight. You can see we have this locating tab as well as one on the bottom. That will go into these two slots in the bumper. That'll just help as a preliminary lineup and retainer. Once that's in, we'll install the three 10mm nuts as tight as you can by hand, and then snug them up with whatever tool you can actually access them with. Now these don't require much torque, so once you get it on by hand, just double-check it with a wrench or a 1/4" drive socket and ratchet, it should be plenty. Now we'll just snug up those 10mms.

Reconnect your electrical connector. Line up your new taillight trim bezel and just push it in until it locks into place. Install your closeout panel and set the three tabs back in. Leave the tops popped up. Set the bases in fully, and you simply push them down, and you're good to go.
