Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video we're going to show you how to replace the tailpipe and muffler on this 2003 Nissan Maxima. It's a similar procedure for any 2000 to 2003 Maxima, as well as the Infinity I30, although the tailpipes, due to the exhaust tip, differ for different models. You're going to need a new pipe and muffler from 1A Auto, 18mm deep socket, ratchet, and breaker bar or pipe for some leverage for a couple of the bolts, a 16mm wrench, although some of the sizes could vary a little bit, some lubricant, and jack and jack stands.
I'm spraying down the two 18mm nuts that hold the exhaust to the midpipe. For this, I'm using a deep socket 18mm. You may break these studs off, it's not a big deal. It'll all come apart anyway. My stud's starting to spin, so I'm going to counterhold with the 16mm wrench. Just like we talked about, I had a stud snap off. Not a big deal, it's still going to come apart. I'm just going to fast-forward here as Don works on that other 18mm nut and the bolt that holds the exhaust together.
You can see that you can get them off by hand, but Don just breaks out the impact wrench to speed it up a little bit. There are three rubber supports that are holding that muffler. We start with this one because it's just going to slide right off of that. That right there can give me a little bit more play. Move to the back, slide that off. With the muffler free, just sneak it through.
Insert your new muffler back in. Once I get it up, I'm going to attach a rubber mount. Sometimes it's helpful to use a little oil on the mount to help it slide in. I'm installing the exhaust gasket, and that's going to go between the two exhaust pipes. Basically, what Don does here is he gets the pipes close together, pinches the gasket in there, gets the nut started, and then uses a screwdriver to just guide that gasket into the right position. Then he tightens up the two nuts. You want to make them nice, firm, and tight. And here's your new 1A Auto tailpipe.
