How to Replace Muffler 2001-05 Honda Civic

In this video, we're going to show you muffler replacement. This is a 2003 Honda Civic, two-door, but this procedure is the same for a 2001-2005 two-door as well as four-door. Items you'll need include: new muffler from 1AAuto.com, 13mm socket with a ratchet extension, penetrating oil, and jack and jack stands.

Spray some penetrating oil onto the bolts that secure the muffler to the mid-pipe. Using a 13 millimeter socket and ratchet, wrench, secure the bolts that secure the muffler to the mid-pipe. Many times these bolts will break, but that's okay. Remove the muffler from the rubber hangers. Doesn't matter which side you pull off, whatever's easiest for you. Pull your muffler out of the car.

Here we have our old part from our 2003 Honda Civic, and our new part from 1AAuto.com. This part's failed from being under the vehicle, getting hot and cold, getting wet, and covered in salt. Our actual baffles, inside the muffler, have broken up, causing the car to be a lot louder than factory.

Our new part is going to have the same flanges, the same pipe and bends, same tail pipe, same hangers. It's going to go right in, just like our original piece; direct fit, and fix you up right.

Inspect your old exhaust hangers to make sure the holes aren't oblong. None of the rubber is torn or dry-rotted. Ours are all right, so we'll be reusing them on our new muffler.

We replaced our mid-pipe while we were in here, so there's no need to clean the surface. We'll install the gasket. If you're reusing your old mid-pipe, you'll want to clean it with a wire brush or sandpaper. Send your new muffler up over the control arm and back onto the hangers.

Our new part comes with nuts already welded on to the mid-pipe, so we'll install our new hardware. Tighten it down with a 13mm ratchet. Bring it down tight until the muffler's nice and firm against the gasket. Now, we'll fire up the car, and make sure that our exhaust doesn't make any kind of noise or rattle, and that our gaskets are properly sealed.
