How To Replace Interior Door Handle 1998-2002 Lincoln Town Car

How to repair, install, fix, change or replace a broken or snapped off interior door handleon 98, 99, 00, 01, and 02 Lincoln Town Car models.

step 1 :Removing the Door Panel
- Unscrew the door lock knob
- Remove the two Phillips head screws from the door pull
- Pull off the door pull handle
- Remove the two Phillips head screws behind the door pull
- Remove the two Phillips screws from the bottom of the door panel
- Remove the Torx screw above the armrest
- Pry out the door panel by hand
- Pry up the window switch panel by hand
- Disconnect the window switch wiring harnesses
- Lift the door panel up and off
- Disconnect the wiring harnesses from the door panel

step 2 :Removing the Door Handle
- Remove the Phillips screw from the door handle
- Pull the handle back and off
- Unclip the door handle from the latch rod

step 3 :Installing the Door Panel
- Clip the door panel onto the latch rod
- Slide the door handle into place
- Insert the Phillips screw into the door handle

step 4 :Reinstalling the Door Panel
- Connect the wiring harnesses to the door panel
- Lift the door panel into place
- Push in the door panel clips
- Insert the Torx screw above the armrest
- Insert the two Phillips screws behind the door pull
- Push the door pull handle into place
- Insert the two Phillips screws into the door pull
- Connect the window switch wiring harnesses
- Push in the window switch panel
- Screw on the door lock knob

In this video, we're going to replace the inside door handle on this Lincoln Town Car. You should only need a Phillips screwdriver to remove the door panel and the door handle itself, although on this vehicle we did need a couple extra tools because it had been taken apart a few too many times.
Door panel removal, is fairly simple. On this vehicle, this door panel's been taken apart a bunch of times, so some of the fasteners may be different for you. For example it has a screw here, which I believe most cars probably don't. The reason it has a screw here, I believe, is because so many of the pins in behind that hold it are broken.
Where you want to start is by removing your door lock knob just by unscrewing it. In under here should be two . on this vehicle they're Phillips screws. Just put your screwdriver up under there.
Now there's another Phillips screw up in here. This pulls out. Then, right in here you'll see there's another Phillips screw that goes into the door panel. As you can tell, I've been fast forwarding when I just get to the monotonous stuff. You remove that screw, and then there's another screw next to the rear side of the pull. Then at the bottom, there are two more Phillips screws. It's a little indent in the carpet. Just put your screwdriver in there, twist it a little bit, and you'll get to the screw. This car has a little Torx screw here. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be there or not. I'll remove it. This may not be on all cars. Then there is another screw here, but this is broken on my car, so I know there's no screw in there. Then what there is, is there's a series of clips, so you would want to work your hand underneath here, and there's one clip right here, and get your hand as close to those . you can slide your hand underneath, and you slide it over and you feel it getting tighter and tighter, and then you give a good pull and get that clip out. Then come up here on the top, give it a good pull on that clip there. Then on these vehicles, there's more clips. There's clips in the middle, and more on the edge. Like I said, this vehicle's been apart a few times. Actually before you pull the door panel off, you want to pull your window switch up in the front, and then pull it out. Then there's a series of harnesses that just have little tabs. You press the tab, pull the harness down. There's a gray one, and a tab; pull it down. There's a tab here on the black one, and the tab here for the brown one. Now pull the panel away, and there's a few more harness connections back here. There are a couple of small harnesses with a black and white connector. Press a little button here; pull that apart. There's a blue connector here that has a tab on it that you pull the wires of the blue connector; pull the tab out. It's hard to see. Then there's a gray connector here. Again, big tab. Pull it apart. Oops. Looks like the screw's not quite all the way out, so .. Your door panel is off.
For the inside door handle, there's a Phillips screw right here. Once that screw's out, move the handle back and it slides off, and then you need to .it's clipped onto the rod here, so you move it kind of back and forth until it twists off like that.
For reinstalling, simply reverse. Put it onto the rod, and then force it up until it goes into the clip. Put it back into the door, slide it forward, and then re-install your Phillips screw. Now we're just going to fast forward through putting the door panel back on.
