Hi, I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1A Auto. I want to help you save time and money repairing or maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20-plus years experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly: that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.
In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the inside door handle on a 2001 Chevy Impala, same as any 2000 and 2005 Chevy Impala. Tools you'll need are Phillip screwdriver, Torx screwdriver size 27, door panel clip tool or putty knife and a regular screwdriver, a rag to protect your paint, a drill and a 3/8 drill bit and a rivet gun and a large rivet or a short coarse thread bolt and a proper wrench to tighten the bolt.
I'm going to fast forward through the door panel removal. If you want to see this in regular speed, just search our other videos for Impala door panel and you can see this removal and the replacing of the door panel in regular speed. Another note on this video: we didn't have a car that actually need the handle replaced and we didn't really want to drill out and replace one that didn't need it. We leave a little to the imagination, we show you how to get to the door handle and then talk about what to do once you're there. Again, not the ideal video for us, but I think you'll get the understanding of what you need to do to get the job done. You'll see that it's not that difficult of a task to do it.
If you're looking to replace your interior door handle, you can see there's little clips on these rods. Take the clips off and then the rods come apart. Probably get this one after it's been . Now these door handles are riveted on here, so you'll have to use probably about a 3/8 inch bit and drill that rivet out and then you can pull the door handle off and just get a short . you want to make sure it's a short stubby screw like this . to reinstall it.
When you reinstall it, make sure you tighten it up, but don't go too tight and you need to make sure that on this screw, when you . a it should be a little difficult. At first you want to get this shaft of the screw to be a little bigger than the hole so you have to force it in there a little bit at first. Then when it tightens, it can bite really well on the metal. You don't want to have it loosely go in there and then when you tighten it, it keeps turning. That's not going to hold your handle.
Obviously, if you have the luxury of a large rivet gun and rivet, you can rivet it back on the way it came out. This is a good alternative. Once you put it back on, you'd just put these rods back in and clip them back on. We'll be using a screwdriver. Really, the most difficult part about really replacing this door handle is the rivet and it's just getting the door panel off itself. Just a quick note that we forgot to mention while we were shooting is, a good idea also is to pull that water shield back and follow those . you can see those silver rods that go down. Follow them down to the door latch area and spray that with a good amount of a penetrant and some white grease. That will help make sure that nothing's binding up in there.
Here I'm going to fast forward through the door panel installation. Again, if you want to see this in regular motion, regular speed, just search our other videos for Impala door panel and we hope this helps you out. Thank you very much.
