How to Replace Inside Door Handle 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero

How to repair, install, fix, change or replace a broken or snapped off interior door handleon 99, 00, 01, 02, 03, and 04 Oldsmobile Alero models.

step 1 :Disconnecting the Battery
- Disconnect the negative battery cable with an 8mm wrench

step 2 :Removing the Door Panel
- Pry off the trim piece inside the door pull with a flat blade screwdriver
- Remove the two Phillips head screws inside the door pull
- Pry off the mirror base trim piece by hand
- Disconnect the speaker wiring lead
- Pry off the reflector with a flat blade screwdriver
- Remove the Phillips head screw behind the reflector
- Pry out the door panel with a door panel clip tool or putty knife
- Lift the door panel up and off
- Disconnect the door lock wiring harness
- Disconnect the window switch wiring harnesses
- Disconnect the mirror switch wiring harness
- Disconnect the trunk switch wiring harness

step 3 :Removing the Outside Door Handle
- Remove the 10mm nut from the door handle
- Slide the door handle forward and off
- Remove the two rods from the door handle

step 4 :Installing the New Outside Door Handle
- Push the rods into the door handle
- Insert the door handle into place
- Tighten the 10mm bolt

step 5 :Reinstalling the Door Panel
- Connect the truck wiring harness
- Connect the door lock wiring harness
- Connect the mirror switch wiring harness
- Connect the window switch wiring harnesses
- Lift the door panel into place
- Push in the door panel clips
- Insert the two Phillips head screws inside the door pull
- Insert the Phillips head screw behind the reflector
- Push in the reflector
- Push in the door pull trim piece
- Connect the speaker wiring lead
- Push on the mirror base trim piece

step 6 :Reconnecting the Battery
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with an 8mm wrench

In this video, we're going to show you how to remove and install an inside door handle on this 2000 Olds Alero, same as any '99 to '04 Alero. This is a two door. The four door in the front is basically the same. A little bit different getting the door panel off, but that's it. Tools you'll need are an 8mm wrench, small flat blade screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, and either a 10mm wrench or socket and ratchet with extension.
Use an 8mm wrench and disconnect your regular battery cable.
You're going to start under your door pull. There's a little trap door here. Either from the top or bottom, just pry that off, and there are two Phillips screws in there. We'll speed it up here a little bit as I just remove those screws. I'll use fast-forward quite often when I'm just doing monotonous tasks like this. Now right up here, you just pull on this panel, and it comes off. If you have this speaker here, just use a screwdriver, pry up on this tab, and disconnect it. Also, down in this corner, use a little screwdriver and pull this reflector out. Then inside here there's a Phillips screw. Once you have that out, a door panel clip tool or a putty knife, and start anywhere, get that in there, and then slide it until you feel a clip. Then the door panel clip tool, you go around a clip, and then pull. That screw comes out of the car, and I can see back in here. Then just work your way all the way around the door. Once you have the door pretty loose it comes out and lifts up.
The door lock should be back on this tab. Disconnect it, and then these two switches have tabs on them. I'm just going to reach underneath and pull that one off. A mirror switch is a little more difficult. There's a tab right here with a screwdriver. I just take my Phillips screwdriver, force it up in there, pry that down, and get it released. The last one here is my turn switch, which, once again, use your screwdriver. There's a locking tab here. Take it off.
To remove your door handle, it's pretty easy. Remove the 10mm bolt right here. Now, push your handle forward and pull it off. Once you take your handle off, you want to basically grab your rods, one with each finger, pull up on the rods while you twist, and remove the handle like that.
For reinstallation, push the rods on around here. Put them on together like that. Slide the thing back into position. Insert the bolts.
Plug in our lock switch right up here, and our mirror. Push this in a little bit. Power window switch. This can go down to our trunk switch. Then make sure you push the top of the door panel in, make sure this speaker lead is up out of there. Push the door panel down into that channel. You may have to use your putty knife or some kind of clip tool to force the upholstery in there a little bit. Peek back in here, make sure your pins are going in where they should. Fast-forward through reinstalling those three Phillips screws. Put your reflector back in. Put this panel back on. Plug back in your lead there. Put that back on.
