In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the front hood lift struts. These are the struts that help the hood stay up on its own. The only tool you'll need is a flat blade screwdriver. These struts are the same for all '82 to '92 Chevy Camaro and Pontiac Firebird and all those other models. There are two different struts. There are struts for cars that have steel hoods and cars that originally came with fiberglass hoods. Just make sure you order the correct struts from 1AAuto.com.

Anybody that's familiar with these sliding hoods will be familiar with a piece of lumber. What you want to do to get these off is, on your hood, the struts and hinges lift it up to a certain point, and you can see my struts are actually pretty good. It lifts up to a certain point and then your hood goes a little bit further. It's kind of a loose spot. You want to support it or have your helper support it or have your piece of lumber support it right in the middle of that loose spot. With your hood properly supported you can see I can actually move my strut a little bit. Take a screwdriver; push the strut, the top of the strut out on the pin. Take a screwdriver pry it out on this clip on one side and then out on the other side and it comes right off. Down here on the bottom, do the same thing; pry the clip with the screwdriver. It's not a great angle to see that. I'm sorry. It's not the best way to film. Basically, what you're doing is your pulling up on it and then you're pulling this clip out and off.

The new strut from 1A Auto is exactly the same as the old strut. It's pretty easy. Put it on. Pull it on. The top is twisted into place and pull it right on. You may want to take a screwdriver and make sure that the clips have a good push. Make sure they lock right in there and it's on there securely.
