In this video, we're going to be working with our 2012 GMC Acadia. We're going to show you how to replace your hood strut, which is what holds the hood open once you've taken it up, as opposed to a mechanical prop like you find on older vehicles. With age, these tend to wear out and not hold the hood up as high, or they may not hold it open at all, which can be dangerous when you're working underneath there. You want to make sure that hood is going to stay up and out of your way.

We have a ton more information on this and many other vehicles, and if you ever need parts for your car, you can follow the link down in the description over to 1AAuto.com.The only item you'll need for this repair is a new hood strut, and a small flat blade screwdriver.
Pop your hood. Open it up all the way. Your hood strut is located here on the driver's side. Using the small, flat blade screwdriver, lift up on this tab. I like to keep my thumb on the back there because these tend to go flying when you release them. Once you get it lifted up, you can remove it from that ball socket. Keep a hand holding the hood open, while we repeat this same step on the bottom. Lift the tab up, keep your finger behind it, and remove it from the ball socket.
Now, to reinstall, these simply pop back onto the ball sockets. You've just got to line them up, press them in until they click, and make sure that's not going anywhere. We'll do the same thing up top, and you're good to go.
