How to Replace Headlights 2000-01 Nissan Maxima

Created on: 2010-03-10

Watch this video to learn how to replace the headlights in your 00-01 Nissan Maxima. Replacing hazy headlights is a great way to freshen up an older car.

  1. DO NOT TOUCH the bulbs- the oil from your fingers will burn into the light and foul your bulb. Clean with rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth if the bulbs do get touched.

step 1 :Remove the headlight assembly
    • Unbolt the two 10 mm bolts at the top of the headlight.
    • Remove the headlight assembly and unplug the bulbs.
  2. step 2 :Install headlight assembly
    • Plug the bulbs and harness into the new headlight assembly
    • Bolt in the two 10mm bolts using your 10 mm socket and ratchet or wrench.

Tools needed

  • 10mm Wrench

    10mm Socket

    Ratchet

Hi. I'm Mike Green. I'm one of the owners of 1A Auto. I want to help you save time and money repairing and maintaining your vehicle. I'm going to use my 20 plus years' experience restoring and repairing cars and trucks like this to show you the correct way to install parts from 1AAuto.com. The right parts installed correctly, that's going to save you time and money. Thank you and enjoy the video.

In this video, we'll be replacing the headlight on 2001 Nissan Maxima. The procedure is basically the same for any 2000 to 2003, although the '02 and '03s did have the HID headlights. Tools you'll need are just a 10 millimeter wrench. Obviously, you may need the replacement headlight bulb or a headlight that was damaged in a slight accident, but you also might want to freshen the appearance of your Maxima. If you look on the right side, the driver's headlight, and now both headlights, you can see how much fresher that your Maxima can look with the new pair of headlights. There's the old. There's the new. One more time, the old, and the new. This car is 150,000 miles. Just with the new headlights, we took about 100,000 miles off of it.

We're moving the headlights. Obviously open the hood and then you have two 10 millimeter bolt right on top. I'm going to use my air ratchet real quick to remove those. Okay. Again, just two 10 millimeters bolts. You can use a wrench or a socket and ratchet. Then the headlight is clipped under here and on the side. What you want to do is you want to pull this out first and then basically just kind of grab hold of it on this side and give it a good pull and it comes up and out. It kind of is getting caught right here a little bit, so I'm going to try and get this here. I'm going to get this first. Once it's pulled out, I'm reaching behind and twist to get the signal out. Then you'll probably want to screwdriver the headlight and you could just kind of get in behind the connector here and pop it off. This is how your headlight comes right out.

You can see here I've got my new headlight from 1A Auto here and here's the old one. You could really see the difference and the clarity and everything, but the new headlight from 1A Auto, everything is just like the original. It's got the tab here just like the original. It has the clip on the bottom. It's hard to see that right here. Everything is going to go in just like the original. Now to install the new headlamp, first you've got to remove this little protector. Put in the signal light. Put those in and twist. I'll make sure I get it lined up correctly here and twist. Plug in the headlight. We're going to put the inside in first here. We're going to slide it in here first and then we're going to push on it and get this pin inside the fender. Get that inside the fender, push down. It all goes into place. Clip that in to place here and then that goes into place there. We'll tighten up our two 10 millimeter bolts and we're all set.

Now we're tightening these with a hand tool. Tighten them up finally with a hand tool to make sure they're right. Our light's in and tight. We're just going to do a quick test here. Everything seems to be working correctly.
