How to Replace Harmonic Balancer 2000-05 Mercury Mountaineer

step 1 :Removing the Air Intake
- Lift up on the engine panel
- Remove the two 11mm nuts from the engine cover
- Pry the hose off the back of the cover
- Remove the engine cover
- Disconnect the air sensor harness
- Loosen the hose clamp on the air intake hose
- Remove the hoses from the air intake hose
- Lift the air box up and out

step 2 :Removing the Upper Radiator Shroud
- Place a drain pan underneath the engine
- Push the teeth together on the hose clamp
- Slide the coolant hose back
- Remove the 13mm nut from the coolant hose bracket
- Remove the bracket
- Remove the bolts on either side of the radiator shroud
- Pry the clip off from the refrigeration line from the radiator shroud
- Remove the radiator shroud

step 3 :Removing the Radiator Fan
- Remove the fan bolts with a 10mm wrench
- Pry the belt off the idler pulley with a screwdriver
- Pull the belt off the alternator
- Hold the water pump pulley with an adjustable wrench
- Loosen the four 10mm bolts and remove two
- Insert the fan pulley wrench into one of the holes
- Loosen the fan clutch with a an adjustable wrench

step 4 :Creating a Harmonic Balancer Holder Tool
- Insert three M8 125 bolts into the holes on the harmonic balancer pulley
- Insert a piece of wood against the bolts
- Make a mark on the wood of where they are
- Mark a straight line between the bolts to find a center point
- Drill with a 3/8 bit where each of the bolts are marked
- Drill a 1/8 hole in the center mark
- Drill with a 1" wood bit on the center mark

step 5 :Removing the Harmonic Balancer Pulley
- Press the wood plank with the M8 bolts into the harmonic balancer pulley to hold the engine and crankshaft in place
- Insert an 18mm socket and ratchet through the center hole and remove the harmonic balancer bolt
- Thread the harmonic balancer puller tool on the 18mm bolt
- Insert the end on the bolt
- Push the M8 bolts into the puller tool
- Mount the puller into the balancer
- Tighten the puller with an adjustable wrench
- Pull the harmonic balancer up and out

step 6 :Installing the New Harmonic Balancer Pulley
- Line up the slot on the harmonic balancer with the tab on the engine
- Tap the harmonic balancer into place
- Insert and tighten the 18mm bolt to the balancer pulley
- Insert the wood and M8 bolts into the balancer pulley
- Torque the 18mm bolt to 70 foot-pounds

step 7 :Reinstalling the Serpentine Belt
- Familiarize yourself with the route of the serpentine belt
- Bring it around the A/C Pulley
- Bring it around the belt tensioner
- Bring it around the harmonic balancer
- Loop the belt around the crank pulley
- Bring it around the water pump
- Bring it around the power steering pulley
- Bring it around the idler pulley
- Pull the tensioner clockwise with the 3/8 inch ratchet
- Pull the belt over the alternator
- Release the tensioner

step 8 :Reinstalling the Radiator Fan
- Insert the lower fan shroud into place
- Twist the radiator fan on
- Tighten the radiator fan with a fan pulley and adjustable wrench
- Insert the radiator hose bracket in place
- Tighten the bolt to the bracket
- Insert the radiator hose in place
- Slide the hose clamp up on the hose
- Replace the two bolts in water pump pulley
- Replace the four bolts to the radiator fan

step 9 :Reinstalling the Air Intake
- Push the air intake box in place
- Insert the air intake hose in place
- Connect the two vacuum hoses to the air intake hose
- Connect the air sensor harness
- Tighten the hose clamp
- Line up the upper fan shroud
- Clamp the refrigeration line
- Insert the bolts on either side of the radiator shroud
- Insert the engine cover into place
- Press the hose on the back of the engine cover
- Insert the two 11mm bolts to the engine cover
- Put the engine panel in place

In this video, we're going to show you how to replace the harmonic balancer on this 2003 Mercury Mountaineer with the 4.6-liter V-8 engine. The items you'll need for this is a new harmonic balancer from 1AAuto.com, metric socket and ratchet set, 1/2 inch breaker bar or ratchet, adjustable wrench, fan pulley wrench, wood (preferably a 2x4), drill and drill bit set, flat blade screwdriver, hammer, pliers, pry bar, three M8 1.25 bolts, harmonic balancer puller, torque wrench, and drip pan.
Lift up on this panel and pull it free. Then remove these two 11mm nuts. Once you remove those, lift the engine cover up and off and then pull the hose free. Lift up on the tab on this harness and disconnect it. Pull this hose free and then loosen up this hose clamp with a flat blade screwdriver. Then just pull that hose free.
Now you just want to lift your air intake box out, so pull those two hoses out, pull the air intake box from the side of the vehicle, and then lift that and the hose assembly up and out. Slide a drip pan underneath. Then, using a pair of pliers, push the teeth together on this clamp, and slide it back, and pull the hose free. You want to lift it up so no more coolant will splash out, and just tuck this end over here.
Now remove this 13mm nut, and we'll fast-forward as Mike does that. Remove the bolts that hold either side of the upper radiator shroud and also undo the clip for the refrigeration line. Using a 10mm wrench, just remove these fan bolts. We're going to remove the fan belt. This is the cheap and easy way, just take a screwdriver and pry it out and off of this idler pulley down here. Once you get it off of there, actually pulling up on the belt and off the alternator. Then just remove the belt the rest of the way. I'm going to get my 10mm wrench on here, and then I'm going to put my large adjustable there to hold it. I'm going to use another wrench to hook on my 10mm to give me some extra leverage and loosen up that bolt.
For now, I'm going to loosen all four bolts, but I'm only going to remove two so I can get the tools in there I need to remove the fan clutch. I'm going to take this tool and the peg goes into the hole there, and then I'm going to put it right against that stud to hold it. I think I've got it here. I use that fan pulley wrench, put it into one of the holes that I had taken one of the bolts out of. Then was able to hold onto it and loosen the fan clutch with the larger adjustable wrench. There. We're going to use a piece of wood to make a tool to hold the crank. If you look down here, you'll see I've got three of these, these bolts are M8 by 125. There are holes in the harmonic balancer pulley.
So I've put those bolts here, and I'm just going to put the piece of wood against them and hold it on there firm. Just make a mark at the top of each one. Here are my three marks. All right, if I draw a line, let's see, straight between these two, it doesn't have to be perfect, straight between these two and straight between these two. That's the center. I've got my three dots, and then I made a center hole, so I'm going to use a 3/8 drill that will be big enough for my bolts to have a little movement for adjustment.
Now I'm going to drill an 1/8 inch pilot hole in the middle. Now we're going to use a 1 inch wood bit because that will allow my socket to get through there pretty easily. I've got my wood. This is the large hole that the socket and ratchet can go through to the crank bolt. I'm going to bolt it on with my three other bolts. Now you can see I've got my board on there, and that can actually hold the crank shaft.
18mm socket and ratchet right through that large hole. The board will let you hold the engine in place while you remove the bolt for the harmonic balancer. This is a harmonic balancer puller tool. You can see we've threaded this on, we're going to put this end on it so that it doesn't go down the crank, and then we're going to use our three long bolts and bolt the three bolts to the harmonic balancer. You can see we've got our puller mounted with the three bolts into the balancer, and we just tighten up the puller and pull it free. Now just pull your harmonic balancer up and out.
Now you want to line up the slot on the harmonic balancer with the tab on the engine and push it back into place. I'm just going to tap it in and make sure it's all the way into place. Once it's all the way in, you can replace that bolt and just tighten it up. You can see I just have my harmonic balancer holder in, but I'm going to put the wrench on here, and I'm going to torque this to 70 foot-pounds. We did put the water pump pulley on with just two bolts that are hand tight for right now. If you get a little lost following Mike on this next clip on how to put the belt back on, you can just refer to this belt diagram.
All right, we're going to feed the belt right down through here, down onto our A/C pulley, over the tensioner, down onto our harmonic balancer crank shaft pulley, up around the water pump, down around here, around our steering pulley. Up on the alternator first, all the way down on this idler pulley.
All right, feed your lower fan shroud in, passenger's side down in first, and push it over and feed the driver's side in. Then you want to pull the passenger's side back up and get the mounting ear below the radiator hose down there. Let's see. You've got to push this mounting ear down past these two transmission cooler hoses and into place. Take your radiator fan, push it back into place, and once you get lined up just twist it back on. Use your fan pulley wrench and your adjustable wrench and just tighten up the radiator fan. Take your radiator hose and push it back into place. Slide the hose clamp back up.
Now replace the other two bolts in your fan pulley and replace the four bolts in the actual radiator fan. Take your air intake box and push it back into the side of the vehicle. Make sure nothing's in the way underneath it. Push it down into place.
Now take the hose and feed underneath the line here and reconnect these two smaller hoses to the air intake hose. Push the intake hose back into place. Reconnect this harness and then tighten up the hose clamp. Lower the upper fan shroud back down into place. Then once you get it lined up, replace the two bolts and tighten them up. Then close those clamps back onto those lines.
