- Remove the 13mm bolt from one strap
- Swing out the strap
- Pull down the strap
- Put the new strap into place
- Insert the 13mm bolt for the strap
- Repeat these steps for the second strap

step 3 :Installing the Skid Plate
- Lift the skid plate into place
- Start the four 13mm bolts into the skid plate
- Tighten the four 13mm bolts

In this video we're going to be working with our 2001 Ford Ranger. We're going to show you how to remove and replace your gas tank straps without needing to support the gas tank. Remove the 13 mm bolt at the front of the skid plate with a socket and ratchet. There's also one on the frame rail at the driver's side. There's another 13 mm bolt at the top, up on the bed support in the center of the truck. If the captured nut on the back breaks loose, you may have to reach up into the bed support rail here and secure the back with a 15 mm wrench. That last 13 mm bolt is located at the rear of the skid plate, on the frame on the driver's side. You may need a helper to hold the skid plate. Now this bolt is pretty rusty, so what we're doing here is bringing it out as far as we can and then tightening it back up, and loosening it again. Once that bolt's out, you and your helper can lower the skid plate down from the gas tank.
When replacing gas tank straps, it is possible to do them without supporting the gas tank, but what you have to do is remove them one at a time and replace them one at a time, so one strap supports the tank while the other is out. Remove the 13 mm bolt on your first tank strap with a socket, ratchet, and some long extensions. Lower the strap, rotate it, and swing it out of its holder.
Install the back of the tank strap, swing it around, and around the drive shaft. Send the bolt up and through your tank strap again, reinstalling it with your 13 mm socket, ratchets, and extensions. We'll now repeat these steps on the rear strap. Install the new tank strap in the rear first, rotate it. Push the tank back into place if yours moved like ours did. Reinstall your 13 mm bolt with your socket, ratchet, and extensions.
Once your tank straps are installed, you're ready to reinstall your skid plate. Have a helper hold up and align the skid plate. Over there. Yep. It's easiest to install the two bolts along the frame first. Once the frame bolts are reinstalled, your helper doesn't have to support the skid plate anymore and you can move on to install the rest of your hardware.
