Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
This video is part two of a three-part video. In part one, we removed the gas tank. In this one we're going to swap out the sending unit. Actually the sending unit and fuel pump and everything in this car is pretty much beat, so I'll show you how to take those out of the old tank, and then I'm going to show you just re-installing a new sending unit and fuel pump in a new tank from 1AAuto.com. Really the only tool I use in this video is a hammer and a cold chisel.
Obviously here's a new tank and old tank side by side. We're just going to take a screwdriver, take off these pads. I'm just going to speed it up here. Use a screwdriver or a putty knife or some other type of flat blade and pull the pads off the old tank and switch them over. Put them in the same place on the new tank.
Next, disconnect the two lines. Basically just kind of try and spin them or twist them back and forth, then squeeze the white part of the clip and pull the line off.
Now, a lock ring holds this in, so you need an impact tool. You can go around the ring, and there's little raised spots. There should be three of them. Once you've met some resistance, that ring comes off, and then your whole assembly carefully comes right out.
So I've got my old one here to look at so I can put it back together. I've got a small piece of hose to put on here with this clamp, bolt clamped on there so it's not going anywhere. I put this insulator right in here and take this filter, and put it up into the insulator. Take our pump, pull off this cap, and put this clamp up on, this cap off, put that up in there, and then bring it back down. Take this and flip it back in here, back down. Push it in. That's a little bit of flip there.
I forgot to put the insulator on, so I'm going to pull that off. Pull the pump carefully up and out. Take the insulator off. Put it on there. Put this back into place. Put it back together.
We've got a gasket that goes right here. Put your ring on here. Put that down in, back in. Setting in place - there's two tabs that line up with little slots in the tank plan. Put the ring down in, and there are three spots where the ring needs to go underneath. When it starts on, and once you have it started properly then just use the hammer and chisel. You want to set the ring evenly, so you just tap on one of the tabs for a little bit, then change to the other one, and just kind of keep rotating until you get the ring all the way locked into position. Just use a little fast forward here as I put that set of tubes that I took from the old tank, plug it back into the new sending unit, and make sure you plug everything very securely. One of those lines is under pressure, so make sure they're on there nice and secure. Then also take the small lines that came from the old sending unit and put them on the new sending unit.
