How to Replace Fog Lights 1993-99 Volkswagen Jetta

Created on: 2013-03-10

Check out this helpful video on how to replace the fog lights on your 93-99 Volkswagen Jetta.

  1. step 1 :Removing the Cover
    • Using the flat blade screwdriver, pry the small cover off.
  2. step 2 :Removing the Bolts
    • Under the cover, you'll find two 8mm bolts-one on the side of the light, and the other on top.
    • In some instances, you'll find that the bolts have nuts. If there are nuts, use an 8mm wrench to hold the nut as you unscrew the bolt. (To get to the nuts, remove the parking lamp by unclipping it.)
  3. step 3 :Disconnecting & Removing the Fog Light
    • Squeezing the tabs on the wires, pull apart and remove the light.
  4. step 4 :Placing the Clips
    • Although out test vehicle did have nuts on the backs of the bolts, it's best to use a wide clip. Put one on the left side of the opening, and one on the top.
  5. step 5 :Replacing the Light
    • Reach into the opening and reconnect the light.
    • Slide into place, and bolt it in.
    • Replace the cover.

Hi, I'm Mike from 1A Auto. I hope this How-To video helps you out. The next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.

In this video, I'm going to show you how to replace a fog light. I'll show you the passenger side. The driver's side is the same procedure. You may need to replace your fogs lights if it's burnt out or if it's been damaged or something like that. At 1A Auto, we sell great, nice new after-market fog lights that are going to install just like the original.

On this vehicle, I'm not sure if it had been taken apart before, because the fasteners that were used to bolt the fog light in place didn't seem to me like they were correct. I had to use a flat blade screwdriver, and 8mm socket and ratchet as well as pliers and an 8mm wrench. I am not 100% sure that the exact procedure I used to get the fog light out in this video is exactly what you'll encounter. The procedure is very similar. You just may encounter some different fasteners when you're removing your fog light.

The fog light, there is a tab, put the screwdriver in here to pry it open so you can see it. This little cover comes out. There's an eight millimeter bolt right here. Use an eight millimeter socket with a ratchet extension.

Now what I'm used to here, most cars as you start taking these bolts out and they come right out. But what I'm actually finding is that there's a nut on the other side holding the bolt in. These are two 8mm bolts. You'll see one down where I am right now and one just a little higher up. I'm still spinning it, trying to figure out if that's the issue. Now I'm a little perturbed and saying what in the world is going on. You'll have to get an eight millimeter wrench as well. Roll it back. There are nuts on the backside.

I start using the wrench to hold the nut on the backside and taking it off with the socket and ratchet and it seems to be working okay. I'm able to fish the wrench up for the upper one. I do have to take the parking lamp out. You just unclip the parking lamp and you can reach the backside of the other one. This is where I'm not sure that these fasteners on this vehicle are original.
You'll see the way I put it together; I put it together with clips and bolts later. But I believe that these fasteners are not original to the car, although they could be. What's on the backside of these bolts is a nut as well as an insert. If these fasteners are original, the insert was intended to stick into the bumper cover, but it doesn't work. They just start spinning. Basically, I use a combination of using a wrench and even some pliers to help hold the nuts and the inserts, and then I just use my fingers. Put my fingers back in there and put enough pressure on the inserts. Push the inserts into the bumper. I'm pushing the insert and bolt assembly towards the front of the car using the friction of the bumper cover with the insert and removing those bolts the rest of the way.

There are two wires here. There are tabs you squeeze together and it should just click. How I took this apart, maybe how it is originally, but what I'm going to do is I'm going to use little clips you can use from a hardware store. Make sure that they're wide so they can go on to the plastic. These little clips just go on to here. Press them on here. All it requires is that you make sure that it's on all the way. Reach to the side, pull up the connector. It only goes on one way to pull the little tabs up there. Put that on and slide this into place. Then two little bolts go right through the clips to hold it on. It's much easier to put together. If you have to take apart again, it's much easier to take apart. That may be the way it should be put together. That may be the way you find your car. I'm not sure. This car could have been taken apart and these little nuts may be something aftermarket, so they were put on there. These clips you can find at the hardware store, and just get bolts for them. Back in. Put it sideways in, and you put this cover back in place.
